Abandon ship - There is no alternative

Posted: Nov 27, 2012

We need to take massive action to change this industry.  Are we going to continue to take the lies from the thieving MTSOs?

A lawsuit here, a lawsuit there, that is helpful for the few involved, but as a group we have to make change happen now.

Fear is keeping us here, and that is what they want.  They steal our pay, they disrespect us, while they get rich.  That's not right in my world.  I deserve to have work when I log in.  I deserve to be paid a living wage for my contribution.

Let's stand together.  Walk off the job.  Just do it when you read this.  No advance warning for them to send the rest of the work to India.

Their systems will reach maximum capacity if the work is not coming off the system, and we can break them.  The work will go as transcribed by the VR/SR systems, and the doctors will see the result.  The hospital administrators probably don't care, but the doctors might.

Leave.  When you log on and there is no work, they have already given you a clear message.  When you have NJA and they are hiring, they have already given you a clear message.  When they conspire to take even more from  your 3-4 cpl, they have given you a clear message.  Let's give them a clear message.

not again... - every month, its like a period

A crazy, hormonal idea that WILL NOT WORK.

I'm sorry you have - hormonal problems

[ In Reply To ..]
with your period. PMS? Or the more severe disorder? Your period is a sign that everything is in working order.

Or are you male making dismissive comments about women?

Your point of view is a point of view that keeps MTs stuck. An idea to move energy is not negative.

I'm so glad I had my hyste.

[ In Reply To ..]
How will that not work? You are making slave wages if you even have work, so you decide to do something else and leave MT behind. Sounds like it would work very well I think!

What do you consider slave wages? - not well off but ok

[ In Reply To ..]
Having a "walk off" does nothing.
I don't think she meant a walk off - see message
[ In Reply To ..]
I think she just said "find an alternative."
So you took her exact words of "walk off the job" - to mean "find an alternative?"
[ In Reply To ..]
Well, there you have it. I apparently did not make up my own version of her post.
no you're right - i misunderstood

How does people staying at their - job serve your purpose?
[ In Reply To ..]
You are relieved that you read it right and now you are convincing someone else that you are right. And your being right is all that matters, and not the spirit of the post. Let's all stay and you will be all right? What do you do that you will be served by MTs staying at their jobs/nonjobs/NJA/minimum wage jobs?
fine - you go first
[ In Reply To ..]
as for me, I'm just getting out of this lousy field and I don't care what happens to it after I'm gone.
My job isnt minimum wage - and,
[ In Reply To ..]
What good would it do my family to walk off this non-minimum wage job? What good am I doing my family. I dont care about the other MTs. They will do what they need to do for themselves and their families. I would never expect someone to quit their job to make a point.

I am right, and I am sorry that you are scorned, but if you are not making enough money, get out and do for yourself. Dont try to use me or other MTs as a pawn to prove your point!
Good for you and - and your non-minimum wage
[ In Reply To ..]
job. When you think you are right, you shut down negotiation, you stop listening. Thanks for letting us know you don't care.

Exactly where they want MTs. Pitted against each other.

you are doing the pitting. Do not assume others don't care - just because they do not agree
[ In Reply To ..]
What do you want? You want other people who are supporting families to bow to YOU and YOUR agenda?

Slave wages? Are you making minimum wage? - see message

[ In Reply To ..]
Minimum wage like countless others in many other industries in this country. The pay may not be what you'd like but calling our pay slave wages is a huge stretch.
Are you new to this board - Or new to this industry
[ In Reply To ..]
And have never read or posted before? You are unaware of the wages in this industry? They are slave wages. They are minimum wage. They are not living wages. If you work in the MTSO industry and are making a living at it, what do you do? Joining the conversation to cause problems?
I am not new to the industry and I am not new to these boards - see message
[ In Reply To ..]
I've been an MT for nearly 20 years. I have posted many many times on these boards.

I am simply saying that "slave wages" is an exaggeration. Slaves are paid nothing. There is a minimum wage in this country and MTSOs must pay, by law, minimum wage. I know of no MTs who are earning less than minimum.

Whether or not US minimum wage is a living wage was not my point.

So stop with the slave wages talk because it is simply not true.
Well, I know of one company who gets around - the minimum wage SM
[ In Reply To ..]
issue by forcing you to be creative with your actual hours worked on your timesheet. I believe if the true hours worked were put on the timesheet it would show that many are making minimum or less. There are many reasons for this, one of them being that we are not paid for many time consuming things we are required to do with each report, and another being the extremely low wage for a knowledge-based job. You may not know these MTs, so what? I'm sure there are many across this country who don't know you either.
You have no idea - what you are talking about
[ In Reply To ..]
There are MTSOs that pay less than minimum wage. And slave wages is an appropriate term.

How ridiculous to get on and make your point about the term slave wages. Does your not knowing about it make it not so? Does your false belief that MTSOs would never do that to an MT make it not so? Wake up. Share what's relevant.

So having a period - and having hormones

[ In Reply To ..]
means an idea won't work? Get with the flow.

What a put down and a conversation stopper. An attempt at a conversation stopper. Crazy hormonal testosterone was what got corporations and execs paying themselves obscene sums of money and giving the leftovers to workers. That worked. Let's turn the table or the hormone. Let oxytocin make the decisions--everyone gets their fair share. Let's put the MT back in MTSO.

wondering how many Google searches you needed - to make a complete thought

So now you are not just putting down people who get their periods, but an MT who might be able to name hormones and their functions.

A work stoppage or finding a new job, interpret it as you will, would hurt you how?
Are we being punked? - this has got to be a joke.
[ In Reply To ..]
A work stoppage would hurt us how? Hmmmmm, lets just think about that for a minute. I dont show up for work becuase you decide that will get us what, more respect, more pay? I get fired for not showing up. I cant pay my bills or put food on the table for my kids. HURT US HOW? THAT IS HOW!!!

I seriously believe that these are Indian posters trying to con us into doing a walk out, so that they can do a walk out to get more money and we lose our jobs!

NOT FALLING FOR IT. I may be young, but I was not born yesterday.

My clear message - RC

I've been applying for non-MT jobs, and the closer I get, the better I sleep at night.
Best of luck finding new job - Edited to read walk-out, not workout.
[ In Reply To ..]
That is the way to take control, not rant and rave to CORPORATE people who don't care.

Getting up and doing a massive walk-out is called cutting off your nose to spite your face. So, you think you'll do that and we'll all be automatically re-hired at a good rate? Nope. Nice pipe dream.

Taking control of your life, means taking control of YOUR life, not trying to control a corporation/people, whatever in life, into doing something your way when they don't give a hoot.

Another Escapes! - Not far behind

[ In Reply To ..]
Good for you! I wish you all the luck in the world.

I'm right behind you - as soon as I find something else I'm kissing this 21-year career forever good bye.

The beauty of being on the bottom of the pay scale is - it doesn't take much of a job to be a huge improvement. I look forward to a minimum wage job with my taxes paid, and only 40 hours a week. Oddly enough, THAT would be a step up from this line of work.

Not everyone is miserable - and not every MTSO is evil

[ In Reply To ..]
I am happy with my job. My employer treats me very well and pays me fairly. If you want to stamp your tiny feet, toss your curls, and stalk off in a huff, by all means do so. No one's stopping you. Expecting others to join your temper tantrum is something akin to hubris.

No,not hubris - wanting something

[ In Reply To ..]
better for the whole. For the whole to be prosperous and happy, not just a few. There is no defense for the abuses in this industry, even if you are happy.

but you are beating a dead horse - the horse being MT

[ In Reply To ..]
do you not understand this? The job itself is so inconsequential to anything; if you only realized this. You think you are providing a noble service for the patients, when they have charts full of documentation that is far more relevant, and accurate, than what we transcribe. Believe me I used to feel the same way you do, but my eyes have been opened. There is nothing to save.

I will not throw away my good job - because you

[ In Reply To ..]
are unhappy with yours. That would not make you any happier with your job, and it would not solve your problems.

So, to be prosperous and happy we all lose our jobs... - how on earth is that prosperous?

[ In Reply To ..]
I think that is delusional thinking. Walking off all of our jobs will not make this better as a whole. They can and will do without us. They already do!
oh but we will have done something great for mankind - right
[ In Reply To ..]
We will be heroes. We will save the profession of MT.

Then the MTs being abused need to do something about it! - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I would not for 1 minute accept a low paying job, disrespect, cheating, and certainly would not sit around all day with NJA. Why are you still there? The MTs in these positions are the ones who need to leave them. If that is the majority, then so be it. Perhaps then it will make a difference. If not, perhaps your company is trying to tell you something. Does this happen all the time? Are your services really needed? If you are capable of better and making more money, do it. If that is not available to you in MTing, then so be it. Address it with your superiors. Did you? If it did not do any good, then so be it, they must be trying to tell you something. All the complaining in the world on this board is not going to change your situation, not to mention it is ludicrous to expect ALL MTs to walk off their jobs because you are not happy or are not in the right position. I am talking about personal responsibility. If the industry as a whole is going down the toilet in the future, and that could be true, it will take care of itself soon enough. It does not matter what we do.
Cynical - me
[ In Reply To ..]
I hope this does not come across as negative, that is not my intention. I hope we can all leave low-paying, dead-end jobs and make more money and have more self-respect. I agree with alot of what you have to say, but to me, some of these posts sound like the OP, i.e., objective being for us to quit our jobs. Even though your post is positive, it still is going for the same result, us out of MT jobs and more jobs for overseas workers. I am very skeptical and cynical when it comes to these boards now a days. I can't tell who is who, who are MTs and who are not. There is no way to know on a public board, anyone can post, multiple times per thread or set up bogus emails in order to post here. I just try to look at the objectives of the posts, what they're trying to accomplish. Hope I didn't offend anyone, just stating my opinion. Not calling anyone a liar either, I just don't know what to believe, and I think that is sad.
Cynical, why does it matter? - all posters are anomymous
[ In Reply To ..]
What are you saying? You have never been able to tell who is who on these boards. Why does it matter if someone is an MT or not. What is it that you don't know what to believe? Why would you think someone would accuse you of calling someone a liar? Are you saying you think people who are not MTs are coming on here asking us to quit our jobs? This is a very bizarre post and I don't understand your meaning.

Every MTs has to look at their own situation. Is it good or bad? If it's good, you don't act on it. If it is bad, you do. Simple. You can't take actions based on what other MTs experiences are, someone telling you not to apply with certain companies, to take lower pay, or to quit your job. Your own experience and research will lead you to what you should believe. All this bull about acting on behalf of the whole MT industry is a crock. No one in any profession does that, and you certainly should not do it based on encouragement from an anonymous board.

why don't you say. Does seem swayed in one direction over the other.

I like my lousy job with MTSO versus I don't like my lousy job with MTSO.

You can't make any change versus we can change things.

Let's all stick together versus you are on your own.

I know the percentage of MTs on this board versus I don't know the percentage of MTs on this board.

I know who owns this board versus I have no idea who owns this board.

I asked the OP (you?) the question. And what percentage of that number - do you think it would take...

[ In Reply To ..]
for a work stoppage to have any effect? Not to mention that the action would be spread across however many different MTSOs, so how noticeable would it even be if, say, even 50% of the readers here followed your advice? Especially considering that a lot of us are dealing with NJA/OOW due to overstaffing, so to make a dent would have to be compensated for by even more missing MTs.
exactly. so when all 8 of us walk off the job - who is to notice?
[ In Reply To ..]
nobody.

Who stands to gain if we follow this - advice?

[ In Reply To ..]
From reading this post and similar ones in the weeks past, seems like taking this kind of action would only benefit off-shore employees and result in our being fired. Good for our global partners and probably good for MTSOs, who probably want to unload us for our cheaper counterparts. Not so good for us. Makes you wonder who is really behind all this chaos here on the boards. Any relationship to our being low on work lately? Could be.

It's already - not good

[ In Reply To ..]
for US MTs. Stay or go, MTSOs will reduce the pay again so US and Indian MTs will make the same cpl.

I don't understand. You think a non-MT wants all the MTs to find new jobs so the rest of the work can go to India? And that means there is a relationship to already low work? Not following.

oh right they will reduce our pay to the same as India - minimum wage laws be damned

[ In Reply To ..]
How can you believe this? Do you think MTSOs are exempt from minimum wage laws?

You might - as

well give up on trying to get many of these people to do anything smart. These people don't get it that if everybody walked off the job, it would make a difference. It would at least open the door for some bargaining with the employer. The whole country is full of people who just do as their told, no matter how much their getting screwed. I know that they are not going to fire everybody and you know that, but many don't. People today have no back bone. It is the strong people who have made a difference in our lives through time that I admire. It is a me, me world and not a world where people fight for what is right for the whole group. These are the people that have let the corporations ruin us. The ones that are doing okay in this field right now will be where the rest are at some point, whether they think so or not. People believe quitting your career is the way to solve the problem. Well, they will leave this career and go into another that will be ruined by corporate greed and the beat goes on. Until people fight for themselves, this will continue.

It is every man for himself. I am GOING DOWN WITH THE SHIP. - see message

Another tired old thread about MTs walking off their jobs. ZZZZZZZZZZ. It does get old. OP, if you need to walk off your job, if there is no alternative for you, then please do it. There will NEVER be any massive action as you describe to "change the industry." This change in beyond our control. Do you think telephone operators or Sears catalog reps saved their jobs by "walking off." No, technology evolved, eliminating their jobs, and there was nothing they could do about it. Same here. It is a sign of the times.

I am very happy with my job. I do not live in fear. I am not disrespected by my company, quite the contrary. I NEVER have NJA. My pay is above average, and I still make $40,000 per year give or take. Now, why would I want to walk off my job for you? Do you think all MTs are in the same ship as you? Certainly, if all the fear and low pay, and NJA describes your job, you should walk off. I would too. But telling every MT to.....really? Get real.

I certainly expect my job to diminish in the near future. The industry is changing. I am prepared for that. I am going down with the ship so to speak. I may end up with a different position with the EMR that is here to stay for a long time. I may get left out in the cold and switch careers altogether if that is what I have to do. No matter what, I would not put up with the treatment that you describe, and neither should you. So, do something about it - but do not expect all MTs to do something about it for you.

Could you tell me where you work so I could apply there? nm - Oldbutstillgood
