What words or phrases do you cringe when people say them - eje

Posted: Nov 13, 2013

I hate brain fart (just stupid), prostrate, illinoise (duh), alztimers or oldtimers, urine analysis instead of urinalysis.. (I have heard docs say this too), these were just on the top of my head.

when they mispronounce - interested

[ In Reply To ..]
Inter-Ested

So how do you pronounce it? - "in tres ted?"

[ In Reply To ..]
I cant stand that way, but int er es ted is correct.

It's a regional thing - Orlie

[ In Reply To ..]
I say IN-ter-es-ted. My husband says IN-tres-ted. I say EN-vel-ope, my husband says AHN-vel-ope. I say IN-sur-ance, my husband say in-SUR-ance.

well they told us in high school that it was wrong - Inter-Ested

[ In Reply To ..]
maybe that's why it bugs me now. It's supposed to sound like "in-trested" with the accent on the first syllable.

that's not a mispronunciation - nm

[ In Reply To ..]

over-reactive bladder NM - typer

[ In Reply To ..]
..

I like brain fart - I hate supposeably

[ In Reply To ..]
xx

Irregardless - That is NOT - a word! Also...

[ In Reply To ..]
there is no such word as heighth!

The incision (or insert any other action) was done by - myself

[ In Reply To ..]
It should be me, not myself. They do this all the time. Bugs the heck out of me!

oh yeah I hate that - nm

[ In Reply To ..]
nm

Allow myself to introduce....myself - cmk

[ In Reply To ..]
I had one doctor I was doing work for and I'd correct that, and he'd repeatedly cross it out and correct me back to "myself". Grrr!

"I have to pee" - that hits my nerve like a root canal - Its vulger.

[ In Reply To ..]
nm

"I have to pee" - Nick

[ In Reply To ..]
I'm a guy (and a former Marine at that) and I also think it is vulgar. Whatever happened to good manners?

the fact of the matter is - thats whats up

[ In Reply To ..]
are 2 of the most cringe worthy phrases for me.

1. It's almost always an opinion, not a fact.
2. My husband is 33 and still says that. One day i'm just going to turn around and ask him when he will ever stop acting 16. UGH

Thanks Nick - nice to know there are still - Its vulger

[ In Reply To ..]
people who have good manners. Thanks for your service to our country too. I'm former US Army. My cousin on my dad's side was a marine, as was my uncle (his father). My dad is former Army and before that former Navy as was his dad (my grandfather). My uncle on my moms side was former Air Force as was his brother. Not any of them say "I've got to pee" (cringe).
Regarding vulgarity - Nick
[ In Reply To ..]
Good to hear from others who have served--my thanks to you, too. As to manners, I am just amazed. I'm surely no prude, in fact, am kind of a "tough guy" image as MMA has been my hobby for a long time. The other day I was walking across the street (in a crosswalk and with the light) and a woman (in a Mercedes, no less) wanted to make a turn but I was in the pedestrian lane. Well, she put her hand out of the car window and gave me the, um, "international gesture of friendship." I couldn't believe it--she was a middle-aged woman, too. So I guess vulgarity cuts across all genders and classes of people. I just wish we all could treat each other decently again, like when I was a little kid. Oh, well. Semper Fi!

As an off-shoot...how do you say that you - need to use the restroom?

[ In Reply To ..]
Do you say "I need to use the restroom," or "I need to use the bathroom," or "I need to use the ladies' room..."

They all sound ridiculous to me, now that I think about it.

There's just no dignified way to say that you need to relieve yourself.

Yes there is dignified. You say I have to go to the bathroom - Its vulger - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
In a public place - I have to use the ladies/mens room. At parties, I need to use your bathroom please. Or if you find yourself in Germany, "Vo is der toilete".

There is no good reason why anyone needs to describe "what" they are going to do while in the bathroom. Would anyone say to someone else "I've got to take a s***"? No, it's vulger as is saying "I've got to pee".

Been saying I need to use the bathroom for over 50 years now. I find nothing ridiculous with that (we all know what we will be doing once in there, no need to describe the obvious). When talking with my husband I say, hold on, I have to go to the bathroom. Even my husband does not say I have to pee. Although he will sometimes say - "you might not want to go in there right away, I left a floater" LOL
You think 'pee' is vulgar, but you put LOL after - your husband saying "left a floater." Strange. NM
[ In Reply To ..]
NM

the ladies room - is what I say when out in company

[ In Reply To ..]
"use the restroom" drives me nuts if someone is at home because at home it's a BATH room. And saying something like "your dog went to the bathroom on my lawn" well that just totally drives me out of my mind. Why is there a bathroom on your lawn?

What do I say - Nick

[ In Reply To ..]
Well, I certainly don't say I'm going to the ladies' room, since I'm a guy. I just say, "Please excuse me for a minute." In depositions, the attorneys will turn to the court reporter and say "Can we go off the record for a few minutes?" and then they just get up and go out. I think most people know where they are going.

I will use the phrase - In front of hubby or close friend

[ In Reply To ..]
...otherwise, it's "...use the restroom."

Often, I'll just say, "I'll be right back."

I type a doc who says "from a cardiac standpoint of view" - drives me nuts... nm

[ In Reply To ..]
:)

words - wondering

[ In Reply To ..]
Pelvic exoneration instead of pelvic exenteration for starters. The misuse of the word which; some dictators just like to use which when they cannot construct an intelligible sentence.

where to start - WWZD

[ In Reply To ..]
nucular

has got, had got, have got

aksed

One doc says chex instead of chest. Nails on a chalkboard! n/m - clb

[ In Reply To ..]
x

I have a doc that says "thump" instead of - thumb

[ In Reply To ..]
He's foreign so I should cut him some slack, but he speaks English so beautifully otherwise.

I have an American doctor who says histolic instead of histologic... that bugs me.

what's her face or what's his face ALSO whassup? nm - mt in poor house

[ In Reply To ..]
nm

I cannot stand "incidences" for "incidents" - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
If we have a number of incidents, it may suggest an incidence, but it's never incidences! Makes me nuts!

I actually never understood the difference - until you explained it.

[ In Reply To ..]
So, thanks!

Oways (always) and acrost (across) get to - me - nm

[ In Reply To ..]
nm

Expresso. Gah! - NM - In-House Lead

[ In Reply To ..]
.

how about often - with a hard T?

[ In Reply To ..]
The T is silent people. If you pronounce the T, please stop right now.

I disagree. The T should be pronounced. - nm

[ In Reply To ..]
.

Merriam-Webster says it's both - me

[ In Reply To ..]
oÃŒ‡-fÉ™n, oÃŒ‡f-tÉ™n

Oro-far-ninx...nm - Oldie

[ In Reply To ..]
nm

anywho - nm - mtcrazy

[ In Reply To ..]
anywho

in lieu of - because they always use it wrong

[ In Reply To ..]
they use it to mean the exact opposite of what it actually means.

I "axed" him to go - Like fingernails on a blackboard

[ In Reply To ..]
That "word" drives me nuts!

i used to type a doc that spoke in Old World English - mtr

[ In Reply To ..]
i am not kidding it was unreal!!!

Scratch this dictation. Let's start over... - mtcrazy

[ In Reply To ..]
This makes me mad!!! This is usually after they have already dictated a page.

where i work we get to leave the dictation even - mjj

[ In Reply To ..]
when they say scratch it
