Urinalysis...what is it about the word NITRITE that they just can't get right?! - SleepyMT

It doesn't matter if it's an MD, PA, NP...it seems at least 99% of them say NITRATE in regards to a urinalysis and they are saying is incredibly clearly. Such an anger trigger for me for some reason. :-D

I don't know; maybe it's the same thing as the people who post here not knowing that it's HIPAA and not HIPPA - no one is perfect.

Doctors are the number one cause of death and injury in the United States, and not by just a small margin either. In the light of that statistic, you don't think the significance of a doctor not knowing the difference between nitrite and nitrate reaches beyond human error? The kinds, numbers, and frequency of errors doctors make in their dictation is telling a much bigger story, one that we should all be calling greater attention to for the sake of the integrity of the healthcare document as well as the survival of our own profession. Many may think a doctor or other healthcare professional not taking the time or having the knowledge necessary to be accurate in a case such as this is no big deal, but it is actually symptomatic of a much bigger problem. We are the safety net for healthcare documentation integrity. We need to stop blindly singing the praises of the medical profession and start holding doctors, nurses, and PAs accountable for the accuracy of what comes out of their mouths.

As an MT, I am not qualified to QA a physician. That's what physcians have peer reviews for.

My job is to transcribe the medical report. If they make an obvious error like nitrite/nitrate, I will just simply change it. If they make a glaring error like potassium of 159, I will flag it.

their pay isn't reduced ONE RED CENT because of errors and MTs are slashed by up to hundreds per week for typos?

My Anatomy and Physiology professor in college said the very first day of class: "If you are in this class and I hear you say 'phar-NIX or lar-NIX' instead of pharynx and larynx, I will fail you."

This reminds me of her. Everyone has their "thing" that bugs them (and I get it is a healthcare issue and a problem, but it is also true that there are so many of these and so many providers that get so many things wrong that its pathetic).

Isn't that what they've gone to school for??? No matter MD, PA, NP, any of them. If you can't pronounce it, then at least spell it - hopefully you can spell it correctly.

It wastes my valuable time and line count to try to figure out what you're saying by listening several times, comparing the verbal mush with the rest of the dictation and see if what I think I hear matches, and then have to send it on to editors anyway because I dont dare make a guess.

That is nothing to simply "get over it" as another poster suggested.

Is there a way in AutoCorrect (Word 2010) to change a comma to a period and then cap the next word to make VR go a little faster? The platform at my old company did this automatically, but MS Word does not : ( This is so frustrating having to change from a comma to a period (or vice versa)--which as you all know happens constantly...and then change the next word to be capitalized (or uncapped)....my wrists are killing me, not to mention it takes so much TIME.....
