Tips on typing with a broken leg - Ima Klutz

Posted: Feb 15, 2010

Does anybody have any experience typing with a broken leg?  I broke my left leg (thank goodness, not my foot pedal leg!) this weekend.  I don't have the luxury of taking time off, but I'm finding it exhausting keeping this leg elevated and sitting upright like we were taught to do.  I'm in a full-leg cast, and it puts a heck of a strain on my gluteus maximus muscles.  I have a feeling I'll just have to keep trying new positions till I find one that works, but I was hoping someone has some ideas (or just sympathy?).

Lots of sympathy - Happy MT Robin

I can't even imagine trying to do this with a full leg cast on.

Do you have a recliner or reclining chair that you can rig up with the foot pedal on the stool?

There was a poster on here a while ago who posted a picture of her recliner with the foot pedal rigged to the foot portion of it. It was pretty cool, actually. Something like that might work, if it's at all feasible for you.

Whatever you end up doing, good luck.

That is how I type. - Reclining.

It is so comfortable!

I'm so sorry, OP, about your broken leg!

Here's how I type (sm) - Nocturnal Hooter-Girl

[ In Reply To ..]
I type either in bed or an easy chair with an ottoman, using my laptop resting on one of those cooling thingies, and with my foot pedal under my outstretched leg/foot. I have lower back issues with sitting in a desk chair for more than 15-20 minutes at a time, and this allows me to type for longer stretches than I could in a traditional setting. Long live the laptop!

How I wish I could use a laptop! - Ima Klutz

I'm an IC but use the PCs that they client gives us. I'm really tempted to try the recliner, but I can't figure out how I would place the monitor. I'll have to brainstorm this with my husband. It looks like it's going to be a very long 8-10 weeks! (Would you believe my first granddaughter is due in four weeks!? - and me laid up! Bummer!)

recliner/foot pedal arrangements - Nocturnal Hooter-Girl

[ In Reply To ..]
Try putting a table just slightly to the side of the recliner, but within your field of vision from where your head will be when you're sitting in the recliner. I have typed in a recliner quite a bit also, and the hardest part is getting the foot pedal to stay on the foot rest without sliding off. Perhaps you could rig a little shelf to sit at the end of the foot rest, so that if the pedal slides off, it only slides back instead of all the way to the floor? Then you could just reel it back in by the cord... I tried putting Velcro tape on the bottom of the pedal, and that helped somewhat, but it was still a little bit awkward. The recliner is by far the most comfortable position for my back though, and I would guess it would be for your bum leg too. Best wishes for a speedy and uneventful recovery! And congratulations on the grandchild!

back/leg problems - MCK

[ In Reply To ..]
I hear you - I have loads of back and neck problems and used get swollen ankles and feet when I sat at a desk so now I sit in an easy chair with my keyboard in my lap, and I alternate feet on the foot pedal. I have my monitor on a double stand on an end table so it's just the right height...yes, thank goodness for laptops :)

Type with the other leg.... - (just kidding! get well soon!) ;D

[ In Reply To ..]
Sorry about the joke - just couldn't help myself.

When I broke my ankle, I had the same problem. Like you stated, I had to just keep trying different positions. Even if you can't get it all the way up to level, however high you can get it is better than nothing. Take more frequent breaks, too, and maybe try softer chair padding? (Pillow, folded up comforter, or one of those gel pads like you see for cars, office chairs, etc.)

As for being a klutz, you can't possibly be as klutzy as the guy I once typed a report on. He broke his leg by slamming the refrigerator door on it. (But why was he putting his leg or foot in the refrigerator? That secret was never divulged....)

Do it this way ... - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Use your elbow. LOL SERIOUSLY!

Put your foot pedal on the arm rest under your left elbow. Wrap it with a towel or put a small pillow on it. You want it propped up high enough so you just need to exert a little pressure.

You can just press down with your elbow to play.

I shattered my left leg and had to wear - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
an external fixator for a LONGGGGG time. With all the hardware/pins, I couldn't put my leg under the desk and elevate it too. You might try putting your keyboard in your lap and sitting further back from your desk, and elevating the left leg on a box with pillow or a portable file box or such. You may also be able to turn a little sideways from your desk front. If you did invest in a laptop, you could probably claim it for job and/or medically necessary expense. I feel for you.

I found a solution! - Ima Klutz

[ In Reply To ..]
I did have my husband drag in the recliner, and it fits perfectly under my desk. I have the keyboard on a pillow on my lap, my leg's up, I work the foot pedal with my right heel (tried the elbow, but I move my arms too much when I'm typing). I had to change the settings on my computer to make everything bigger so I can still see my work. Now I feel actually luxurious (sp?)! No pain! I've been typing for about three hours and feel just fine! Thanks to all of you for your sympathy and tips. I think I'll actually be able to make this work!

leg - MCK

that's wonderful...I'm so glad you found a solution!!!

Both my legs were out of commission at one point. I was able to - use my elbow for the pedal with little trouble. n

MQ Has Finally Broken Me...

I was actually reduced to tears today with the bullying and threats from people of various departments.  Support acts as though we are stupid and below their level and the shipping department basically called me a liar, but in a nice way after their nastiness.  Due to my age, it will be hard finding a job but at this point, I will sweep floors rather than put up with those with big heads because of a meaningless title.  Then again, on second thought.....I am not leaving without a ...

Finally Broken
May 15, 2015

I've been doing this job for 10 years. I've been with what is now mmodal the whole way. I've seen really good MTs let go or just beat down until they left. With every change they threw at us I was able to find what I needed inside of me to stay with the job and have hope not that things would ever go back but that I could still at least buy a few groceries for our family, but this last POD "idea" that they threw us into has broken my spirit.  Fluency has some really good thin ...

I finally did it! I got a bad audit, could feel it coming. I thought it was on one report but it was on several, not from the same account, not the same doctor, etc.  I'm still going through the interview process for the job I will probably get hired for, but it still may be up to a month before they make the offer.  I will post when I get it for sure.  My confidence in my ability to understand a new job is at an all time low. Been tracking my work for the last couple of years on ASR, am able to calculate my paycheck usually within a dollar of what it should be upon deposit into my account, and thought I'd share some tips I've learned from ASR: Keep your fingers on the keyboard. Anyone who says they are bored doing ASR isn't doing it right. It is just as challenging as typing, even more so because of the concentration required. It is much like playing the piano in that one's fingers are always mov ...

ASR Tips Revisited
Jan 28, 2010

Have read through numerous tips on this board on how to increase productivity (TY), but for the life of me can't seem to make much progress. There is one HUGE hurdle that slows me down terribly. At the very beginning of dictation, where the dictating physician says all the mumbo jumbo that should not be in a report - ADT info - we are to place a skip marker (and as far as my experience, it doesn't make much sense to place any more unless there is a blatant gap where none of the garbage ...

Burnout: Any Tips To Get Over It? Sm

I have been an MT for 13 years and lately I have been suffering from severe burnout.  I need the money so badly!!!  But it seems impossible to stay focused on my work.  Sometimes sitting down transcribing is nearly impossible - feels like trying to swallow bad cough medicine or something!  I have tried putting up pictures of reasons I need to be focusing and typing and have tried challenging myself with line counts, etc.  I just dont seem to be able to do it.  ...

Tips For Success With VR
May 14, 2010

Learning to use VR can be accomplished by any MT who has solid MT skills and is knowledgeable about their work.  I do not believe newbies or grads within their first 2 years should be using VR without QA backup (just my opinion). 1.  You have to want to learn to use it effectively.  If you try to do it kicking and screaming, being obstinant, you simply will hinder your learning curve and depth significantly.  2.  It takes time.  You will not learn it overnight.&nb ...

What Are Your Production Tips?

I know that everyone says there is no money in VR, but sometimes you have to take the job you are given and be thankful for that. The account I am working on is 99% VR.  I was wondering if anyone had any tips on being productive.  For example, do you look at your report first and fix any obvious errors and then listen to the dictation or do you just jump right in with the dictation and do it all then?  Currently, I make about 5cpl for VR, which compared to some quotes I have rea ...

If you don't like those panels on the side of your text screen showing, you can drag the right and left margins of text screen to widen the text screen.  You can also drag the upper and lower margins.    You can enlarge the size of the font and change the style of the font (which only will change it on your end, not the client's end).  I am not in the program right now, but I think it is under Tools at the top, then click on the tabs to see which one has the font ...

Proofing Tips
Jun 01, 2012

Would anyone be willing to share their proofreading tips. I find that VR requires a much higher level of concentration and focus to catch errors. The text on the screen can become a blur. I am finding that something that needs to be deleted from the text is actually harder to catch than something that needs to be changed or added. Any tips would be helpful. I do see m ...

Tips For VR Success (what Worked For Me)

Trust me, I understand the agony of going from transcription to editing.  If you have a great dictator, it’s not so bad but fewer accounts and fewer dictators fit that bill any more.    Doing editing on a heavier basis daily also begins to make it more of a concern if you are not making up the difference in your production compared with your transcription line counts.
