The types of jobs I see a lot of.... - (see message)

Posted: Aug 02, 2012

I make it a habit to check job boards and listings every day.  A couple of places I check a lot are Indeed and Craigslist.  (I know Craigslist jobs have to be taken with a grain of salt because some of them are scams.)

This is kind of interesting to me: For some reason, I notice a lot of jobs at veterinary clinics and chiropractors' offices.

It's just curious to me.  Are these two types of businesses doing so well that they're always needing more help, or are they just not-so-great places to work so have a lot of turnover?  It's a little annoying because the chiropractors' offices often pop up if I'm searching for "medical office," are listed under "medical" in the Craigslist jobs, or have a posting something like "Front Office for Doctor's Office."  No offense to chiropractors, but that's not the kind of medical office work I have experience in, and I'm not really interested in either vet or chiropractic office jobs....though apparently I'd have better luck finding something if I was!  Laughing

If you're job-hunting, too, what kinds of businesses do you see frequently in your area?

I see a lot of jobs working in a dental office. They are dental hygienists, dental assistants, or dental receptionist. Also Medical Assistants, Licensed massage therapist, Certified Nursing Assistant.

Greyhoud Mom--your post reminds me that I also see quite a few jobs for opticians or optometrist's office jobs....reception, dispensing glasses, etc. I think this sounds like a job that a lot of us MTs could easily transition to, also.

Like you, I also see a lot for CMAs, CNAs, and MAs as well as quite a few dental office jobs.

I know most of us could DO some of these jobs at various offices, but too many of them around here seem to want you to have "2-3 years' experience" in that particular type of field or to know the specific optical or dental software that their office uses. I have seen a few optician jobs that say "prefer experience but will train the right person," but either the location or hours have never been quite right for me. Anyway, I keep looking!!

I've applied for jobs on Craigslist for administrative work and of course received the call from insurance companies wanting outside sales, no base salary, use your own car, good luck. That's just crazy. I had my second interview today as a patient advocate at a place that oversees group homes......Was offered the job and then told $8 an hour. I almost laughed in their faces. I made that in the 80's.

Oh, ugh, Dallas! - (see message)

That was discouraging, I'm sure!!! And especially after being called back for a second interview...it was probably looking pretty good at that point. This is one reason I HATE that so many job listings don't give the salary.

Why do employers persist in playing that game??? I know it's been done that way forever, but in this current climate where so many people are applying for jobs, it looks like it would save EVERYONE time and trouble if they would list the pay. They know about how much they're willing to pay--just tell us up front, for crying out loud!

On the Craigslist jobs--they often DO give the "compensation" or a range, which I really like about those. I'm very leery about jobs where they list a fantastic compensation amount, though, that seems way out of line for the norm in our area. If I see an entry-level receptionist job that says $15/hr, that's a big red flag for me.

Veterinary jobs low pay, which means high turnover. - Ex-Vet Tech

[ In Reply To ..]
I worked as a vet tech for many years. The most I was paid was $12/hour (although average pay for vet techs in my area was $8-9/hour) because I did overnight emergency/critical care. I worked 12-hour shifts, which was nice, but if an emergency came in as I was about to be done with my shift, I would have to stay and would many times end up working 14+ hours. Felt like all I did was work, which was not worth the $12/hour.

In my area, the jobs always listed are medical assistants and dental assistants. I live in a remote area though and there are no training programs for those jobs here, which is why I think they are always looking. Most of them say they offer in-house training. I am sure they get a lot of high turnover from people who just need any job and jump at the chance for training and then quit when they realize it is not for them. Plus the pay offered for those jobs is low, $8-10/hour here, so basically close to minimum wage, which no one can live on here due to the high cost of living (tourist destination).

Good companies to work for - 1mt

So, I understand that there are a lot of companies taking advantage, low pay, too many hours, but does anybody know of any companies who pay fairly? Do they know of any companies that have flexible scheduling?

Thanks

ER Work Types
Apr 24, 2013

Hi, I've been an MT for 8 years, but have never, ever typed ER reports.  My company has been very slow and I was applying for other jobs and my supervisor just told me she has another account she can add me to and it is an ER account.  I'm not sure why I never thought about it before, why ER reports don't get in the regular pool like the rest of the hospital, but was just wondering, is a strictly ER account usually good work to do?  Are they just your typical transc ...

LPH, Work Types, ESLs
Mar 10, 2012

I'd like to ask a favor please.  When people post what their LPH is, like one poster below saying 500 LPH, would you also post what work types you are working on and the percentage of ESLs.  Acute care or clinic, radiology, ER. It is not that I am doubting, but just comparing it to my work. Instant Text Types Out Suffixes Of Words
Mar 04, 2010

It drives me crazy (not to mention is very time consuming), but Instant Text types out suffixes of words, e.g. I type 'complaint' then realize it should be 'complaints' so I backspace and add the 's'.  It then types out 'complaintubal sterilization' (it expanded the 'ts'). This happens a lot, and I wonder if anyone knows if there is a setting I can change. Thank you in advance. ...

Just Another Vent About Jobs, No Jobs, Requirement Of Jobs, Etc.
Aug 18, 2010

It is insulting to all of us with the way that MT pay has gone down the drain, it is frustrating and aggravating to look for a "decent" job these days, trying to work out which companies will treat you fairly, which ones lie about their platforms, work, etc., and not only do these companies not want to pay us what we are worth but now I see that MANY companies are requiring the MT to have or "be willing" to purchase hundreds of dollars worth of equipment.  If an employer can PROMISE IN ...

Once And For All - There Are No Jobs!
Dec 20, 2009

EMR And MT Jobs
Mar 09, 2010

I recently changed my health care to Kaiser and have observed first hand and for the first time, the use of electronic medical records; they really are of immeasurable assistance to each provider who is treating the patient.  Nevertheless, there are still certain physicians who must dictate, i.e., surgeons, consultants, certain medical specialists.  There will undoubtedly be fewer jobs for MTs but there will still be jobs for those who can transcribe those reports.  It will a ...
