Reference list question - cc

There is job posted on one of the boards. They are asking to email a cover letter, resume and to include a reference list. I googled reference list and there is actually a template to make it look professional. My question is the last company I chose to leave and when I asked my supervisor in an email if I could use her as a reference for a nonrelated MT job she never responded. I had worked there six years. The previous two companies do not even exist anymore and it has been 18 years since I worked at a hospital. How do I handle this on the application. If I ignore this I feel that I am not paying attention to detail. Anyone have any suggestions?

I worked for and would still give me a great reference. I have used friends who work in the MT business as references in the past. Nothing wrong with using a co-worker who knows you, QA people who would be willing to let you use them as a reference. References don't have to be just about MT. I don't see anything wrong with using someone as a reference who you worked for that had nothing to do with MT especially if they can tell someone what type of employee you were for them. It isn't just about being a good MT, also how reliable you are and what type of person you were to work with, etc.

With 25 years as an MT, 20 of which have been as an at-home employee, I've run into this problem, too. I believe I once wrote something like, "References will be provided on request; however, due to industry mergers, employee migration, and company policies, it may be difficult to substantiate my work ethic/quality. I would be pleased to provide character references..."

I wouldn't want to provide references anyway until things were further along in the process. Any MTSO should understand that this is a difficult request. Oftentimes, even QA personnel don't give their names or have direct communication with MTs, and supervisors aren't always allowed to provide references. Most times references are requested, the prospective employer may wonder if these are neighbors, friends, or relatives speaking favorably about you. Lots of companies these days make it clear up front that they will only tell a potential employer whether you are eligible for rehire. One's length of employment should be an indication of your value...why would a company have continued to employ you if you had failed to meet your commitments? Lately I've begun to print out QA scores to document the quality of my work. Never know when THAT may be necessary.

I see that you can relate to what I am saying. I have been in this business 30 years. It is hard to give references especially since I have been on-site 20 years (left there in 1994) and then 4 years in one place and six years in another. The four year position was the Q. That was in 2003. There is no way I would be able to contact them now. Most of the time I say references upon request but this posting says include reference list. I know two professional people I can include and take it from there. Thanks

You say the ad requires that you provide references. I'm sorry :( I would find this virtually impossible to do. (I was with the Q for years, too.)

Anyway, for anyone interested, I changed my resume to state the following...this encompasses a period of 20+ years, and it would look ridiculous to list all the MTSOs. I'm afraid it would give the wrong impression, so I changed it to this:

(Span of years): Acute-Care Medical Transcriptionist for various national medical transcription services. A list of companies will be provided on request. I have been employed by xxxxx for 4 years. The combination of unprecedented company mergers, improvements in voice-recognition technology, and low-cost offshore contracting for medical records has created enormous instability for MTs over recent years.

It may not impress the reader, but I want him/her to know that external forces have caused me to navigate through a minefield of MTSOs.

Is there is quick way to add commas between items in a list? Of course, using Ctl K in front a word will change the punctuation, but it will also change a capitalized drug to lower case, and you will still have to get to the beginning of the next drug which will require 2 Ctl arrows and backspace. Ctl arrow takes you to the beginning of the next word, but you will have to backspace to put in the comma. Adding punctuation to lists is so time consuming! ...

Does anyone else have problems supplying work references? It seems the jobs I'm interested in all very emphatically ask for work references that can be verified and I've worked at home for just two companies in the past 10 years and had no contact with any other employees besides my supervisors. I know I have come across the answer to this question in the past, but can't seem to put my fingers on it now...... 1. CP 2/3. BOS then Standards OR Standards then BOS? In reference to the q.h.s. question... since all 3 references usually appear somewhere on each CP, would not q.h.s. vs nightly depend on the order of reference materials used?
