Reference books? - Stedman

Posted: Jul 07, 2013

Does anyone use actual reference books any longer?  I paid so much for Stedman's books and now I never use them.  I am a big Google fan.

I have all of the Stedman books and did not use them for the last 3-4 years. I keep them as part of my library, but even if I went back to MT (oh, please, NO), I would not use them. They are too Old School, even for an old gal like me. Give me my computer and my BlackBerry any day.

Really... - do they even

sell those old word books any more?

I was just talking to my hubby about this the other day - I have the complete set - sm

And never use them anymore and I paid some good money for them. They are probably worthless now. I hate to throw them away but since I never use them I am not sure what to do with them. My two specialities are ortho and oncology and those books are very well worn, some of them I may have used 1-2 times. Google is always on when I am working.

They are selling on ebay. Maybe some MTs aren't working on internet?

Old Pro - I doubt they sell them

I bought these over 10 years ago, just keep them for sentimental reasons.

Now that breaks my heart! - Backwards Typist

I was forced to retire due to lack of work and operations the next year and have all these Stedman books and CD's.

Now I know why they didn't sell on eBay. Kinda sux cuz I put a lot of money into those books, CD's, BOS, etc. and would have liked to see a little return for my expenses.

Guess they'll all go to the recycle bin. :(

Very, very seldom, but do like having them when there's like a hyphenated - vs. nonhyphenated conflict, e.g.,

that Google makes even more confusing.  I only have Stedman's Cardiology & Pulmonary now (used to have like 8 Stedman's) and an old Saunders Pharmaceutical Word Book, but I'm actually thinking about buying a Stedman's Ortho & Rehab because that's the one specialty I have the most problems finding instruments, etc., for while doing OPs.

Stedman - Books

[ In Reply To ..]
I have the whole Stedman's library of books and I honestly can't remember the last time I even opened one of them. Now that I am in school and planning my exit from MT, I have recently been thinking about what to do with them (besides dusting them once a week or so)! Never mind all the foot pedals, headsets, CDs, Books of Style (goodbye AHDI sistas and brothas!), etc., that I have.

Stedman Books - Ortho MT

[ In Reply To ..]
I only do ortho now; two clinic accounts and OMG, they are WONDERFUL! I still used my Stedman's once in a while; it comes in handy, but I wouldn't buy a new addition if one came out. I use PogoFrog.com for my searches and it is great; especially for medical; unlike google, where you get everything. If I can find something in my Stedman book and find it online, I just make a note of it. I also used to work on a dermatology account and I found the Stedman to come in really handy, except for the drugs and there were a gajillion of them it seemed. Lots of notes in that book. If I had to do acute care again, I doubt I would use them at all, unless they can help me with all the ESLs!

Congrats on your exit! Maybe we could light your BOS on fire and have a bonfire with it with s'mores and Chicago red hots! I'll buy the hot dogs!

I Love my Stedman's - see msg

I got out of MT, but I still used my Stedman's, though certainly not as much. IMHO, they are timeless. A general Google is nuts if you ask me (diabetes melitis!?). I much preferred to use specific sites that I knew were accurate rather than just a Google. You don't really know if the info is correct or not, and I ended up verifying trought my Stedman's anyway!

Anyway, even though I'm out the business, I still have my Stedman's. I like all the pretty colors; they brighten up my office. They are also very sentimental to me. They remind of when I first bought them all, back when MT was a GOOD place to me. Sentimental is a good word for them. They were my lifesavers when I was first starting out and I was actually have a fun time of it.

Sorry, MT, bye-bye.

Haven't cracked a book since internet access made possible - without having to log off account. NM

Question regarding use of reference books....I've been working for the same transcription company for 10 years and have kept very busy in that time, but as of the last six months, they have lost accounts and work has dropped off significantly.    I applied for a job last week that asked me which reference books I currently use.  To be honest, I haven't renewed any of my reference books in about 8 years, as I found it to be much, much quicker to locate terms via the Internet if you ...

Reference Books - Out Of Curiosity
Jul 19, 2011

Hello, MTs! I am back for another question! I do have a list of books I'm interested in purchasing from either Dorland's or Stedman's medical dictionary to Merck Manual's of Patient Symptoms (the list goes on, but I'm just naming a couple). Google is so wonderful when it comes to researching when you don't have anything, but I feel it's not completely reliable as having hardcopy materials. Out of curiosity, what book(s) can you not live without or work without ...

MT Books Question
Dec 08, 2012

Hi all, I have a bunch of Stedman's word books that I don't want to go through the trouble of selling.  I just want to maybe donate them somewhere in one swoop, but where would one donate something like this? I stopped updating my books some years ago when our pays weren't what they were before that, and also with the Internet they weren't as big a necessity as years prior. I never updated all of ...

Websites Or Books For OP Terminology
Dec 01, 2011

Meant to post in the word help section.  Hopefully it gets moved.  Sorry. I have been a clinic transcriptionist for 14 years in all specialties but have very little hospital experience and no experience with OP notes.  I started a new job this week and was asked if I wanted to try hospital/OP notes so I said sure.  I figured since my production and accuracy were going to be lower due to the new platform, account specs, dictators, etc., it would be as good a time as ...

Best Surgical Instruments Books
Dec 19, 2013

For you all who do OP notes, what resources do you use to find the surgical equipment?  I have been an MT for quite a while, but I have just started doing OP notes and thank goodness I have access to other reports, but sometimes it takes a while to wade through so many reports to find a similar one.  So, I figured it might be easier to have a book at hand that had many of the instruments.  If you all have books, which ones do you recommend?  Thank you in advance! :) ...

Time To Update My Ref Books, Dictionaries, Etc. What Do You Suggest?
Jan 18, 2011

My reference resources are starting to show their age and I've decided to update them this year. I would like an opinion as to what is really worth the $$. Ability to use within Word 2010 is a plus and CD's are preferable to books. *Saunders Pharmaceutical Word Book ($41.95) vs QuickLook ($49). I currently have Saunders and really love it due to the fact that it regularly self-updates, shows methods of admin, dosages, gen/Rx, and indications for use, but is expired now and drugs are ...

Fabulous Way To Save Money On Coding Books!
Aug 16, 2012

Now that I have your attention . . .it is THAT TIME of year again.  Before you order your 2013 code books, remember that there is only one ICD-9 diagnosis code change for 2013.  You do not need to buy a new book this year.  Just get the change from the CDC website and add it by hand.  Same with the procedures. There will be a gazillion CPT changes, sad to say, so get a head start on those.  The CPT books should be available soon, if not already.  The AMA publishes ...
