Re: Trying to "save" MT. - Rant brought on after

Posted: Sep 16, 2012

making about a dollar in a half hour of listening to some lost intern flip through papers while some jackass sitting next to her chatted with someone else at the top of his lungs.

Instead of trying to save MT, for god's sake, save yourself!  If you like health care, study, work hard and find a good career that pays you what you are worth, don't settle for pennies doing piecemeal work like someone in a third world sweat shop.

Most MTs are smart enough to become nurses, technicians or even doctors if they apply themselves, people with real careers and a path to upward mobility, and most of all R-E-S-P-E-C-T!

This job is simply not worth trying to bring back from where ever its going and will never again be a viable way to make a "good" living.   It's too late for me so close to retirement (in poverty), but many of you still have choices... make the right ones!

Rant over... now back to the sweatshop!  Frown

Is that all anyone does on here is complain...GROW UP!! Be glad you have a job and make the most of it. I LOVE my career as a MT, and it is so sad to me to hear all this negativity ALL the time on here!! I am cancelling my subscription to this newsletter because it is NOTHING but babies crying on here!! WAKE UP!

I agree - to an extent

[ In Reply To ..]
I see so many say that MT is dead or dying, when I do very well at my jobs. Granted, I don't get to just work 20 minutes a day, doing specific reports for a wonderful, perfect doctor, but we can't all cherry pick, can we.

I work 3 jobs (all part time) and I make a very comfortable living here. I know that tomorrow the accounts could be gone and I would be searching for work again, but it is out there. You may not get to dictate who/how/when/where you are doing your job, but get a "real" job and see how much of that you get to dictate with them. I love being home with my kids whenever they need me, not having to have a "work" wardrobe, not having to get out in the snow and ice to brave the roads for some menial job. I love working from home and I love all three companies I work for!

Also, no benefits, no PTO, etc., etc. - Inquiring minds

Isn't it wonderful to have to work 3 jobs to make ends meet?

This really bothers me. Do they think we are making our situations up? Because I'm here to tell you, we're not.

and the person above who thinks we all need to grow up and wake up and embrace this wonderful profession.
not just "making ends meet" - 3 jobs
[ In Reply To ..]
I do NOT work 3 jobs to "make ends meet." I work 3 jobs because I like them all and couldn't decide which to keep and which to get rid of. I don't need benefits because my husband's job has GREAT benefits. I save, so I plan accordingly for PTO and I am able to take work with me on the go.

I guess I don't understand if so many are SOOOOOOO miserable in this profession or want to gripe and complain about what they don't have, why stay in the business? Seems to me that if your life/job is so awful, you could make changes in it. Apparently though, it's easier to come here and complain than it is to stand up and do something.
Maybe because soooooo many dont have a - husband with GREAT benefits
[ In Reply To ..]
ya think?
no hubby - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
I don't have a hubby. If I want a meal ticket, it has to be myself. We're not complaining, we are commiserating. And we're not wallowing in it. Lots are making the move to get out. It helps to find encouragement on doing that here and getting tips on how to do so.

If I had a husband with GREAT benefits, I would think MT looked like a gravy train with biscuit wheels, too. Jeez, no sympathy. Sucks to be us.
Maybe we're trying - MME
[ In Reply To ..]
but the specialized training we have doesn't lend itself to doing anything else and we don't make enough to go back to school. Do you really think we keep doing this just so we'll have something to complain about?

about the whiners... - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
I just found these boards 3-4 months ago. Things with my company got so bad so quickly, I thought it was just a rotten company and I needed to look for another one. Working from home, I was totally out of the loop. I started reading these boards and was SHOCKED to realize my situation is happening everywhere.

I don't see people as whiners. I saw my situation was not unique. Others were as confused and desperate as I was (am). I didn't realize companies were offshoring to such an extent, didn't know EMR was inevitable, didn't know the big companies were gobbling up the smaller ones. I didn't even realize onsite hospital MTs were being affected.

Anyway, if I hadn't started reading and posting on these boards, I would have thought my situation was in the minority, that I was a bad worker, not dedicated enough, or that it was just my company going down the tubes. But reading posts from others, asking questions and getting wonderful advice and input, I've made the step to train for another profession. I'm so glad I found you "whiners." If not, I may have gone down with the ship, caught completely offguard, or thought I had to stay in this rat race somehow, stressed to the max, for the next 30 years. Ha!

Amen - VetMT

Couldn't have put it better myself. I am looking forward to supplementing my mostly-gone retirement income working at Barnes & Noble--something pleasant.

I also felt your advice to save ourselves is empowering. Yes, we have felt victimized by greedy conglomerates. But where would they be if we all said "We're mad as hell and we're not gonna take it any more!" I'm outta here by the end of the year, after 43 years.

RE: AMEN - YAY FOR WHINERS - AnotherVetMT

[ In Reply To ..]
Been in the business going on 30+ years...GETTING OUT AS SOON AS I POSSIBLY CAN. For all the reasons above and more. It just isn't the same.

As for the whiners...THANK YOU. I TOO felt all alone and lost and thought it was only happening to me. It's nice to know I'm not alone. KEEP WHINING...LOL

I'm Getting Out - old and frustrated

[ In Reply To ..]
I just finally have had it. I'm getting out now. Money may be tight - but it's been awful for years. After 35+ years experience MTing is going down the toilet. I recently had interviews with two nationals (the big ones). Well the questions they asked were STUPID - the one interviewer was rather condescending and acting like my questions weren't valid point and she just dosey doed (sp) around. I told her forget it. I remember when we were once a proud profession, wore whites and were respected! Now the kids at McD's get more respect than we do. As a matter of fact I think I'd make more there than I did last year. Get out if you can it is not worth your health! In a few years there will be 3 huge MTSOS and anyone left will be working 12 hours a day to make a living!

This particular doc is super-annoying. Save Your Job- Sign This Petition
Nov 20, 2012

As many of you know, EMR companies charge fees upwards of 15,000 dollars to allow transcription companies to integrate with them. This barrier to entry will lead to us all being replaced by voice recognition or point and click unless we all do something. There is no reason transcriptionists can not co-exist with EMR's. Doctors still need someone to type their records up for them. It is simply a faster and a more efficient use of resources to keep us in the loop. Eliminating these EMR fees ...
