Psych Transcribing? - tschmidt

Is there anyone here who can tell me why many of the companies who have psych reports only want MTs with 5 or more years experience? I've done a few psych reports and had no problems with them. I find them fascinating and would love to secure a job doing mainly those type of reports (if there are such jobs?). Just wondering why the 5 year requirement? Thank you in advance to anyone who has an answer.

I do strictly psych transcription and love it. I think if you can land a job doing psych, you are "safer" maybe than acute or clinic . . . because with psych transcription, it is much more detailed and there is not a lot of general formatting like medical (i.e., HEENT, etc.). Because of this, it would be very difficult, if possible, for ALL psych transcription to go straight to voice recognition or EMR template. As far as anyone hiring, though, I don't know. Where I work, our work has been very slow for the last couple of months. It is more interesting than medical but a lot of it is sad, too, so you really have to separate yourself from what you are typing. A lot of long reports, too, so that's good. Just keep looking. You'll find something. Good luck!

Most of the psych reports are foreign dictators. Most of the people running the businesses with strictly these types of reports are pretty difficult to deal with also. As they say, 'it takes one to know one.' Try PsychType out of Bartlett, Illinois. She will hire and train to her way of typing the reports. She only pays 4 or 5 cents for straight typing though. Try Craig's List...I believe some of the psych report companies are listed there. Yes, they are interesting, but sometimes very picky and very foreign. Plus in this economy now and the insurance companies not paying but only 50% of any psych admission....nobody is rushing for therapy...plus one has to want the therapy and we all know that the psych patient does not think it is them, it is everyone else. Plus, a lot of the institutions are closing. Our laws now read that you have the right to be crazy.

I have to agree re difficult psych trans service owners. Tried one out of Sacramento, CA. The work wasn't the problem, but the owner was....well, let's just say she was in the right specialty.

I work as an IC MT for a psych clinic. My director called, asking for coding information. He knows nothing about coding (neither do I) and it took me a while to catch on to what he wanted.
