Well this whole transcription thing is not going well. Duh! With a really bad work schedule, an hour commute each way and now the threat of the hospital outsourcing our department, I am trying to think of something I can do from home besides work for peanuts for a MTSO. I am expecting my first child soon and really want to be home with him. Does anyone have a friend or family member who has successfully implemented her own business (perhaps with a transcription background) and if so, what did they do? I thought about breaking into legal transcription but I'm afraid it may be more of the same. Does anyone have any thoughts on that? With 10+ years as a transcriptionist you would think these skills would be good for SOMETHING besides knowing how to spell medical terms but I feel so useless right now. I kid you not, I've even considered moonlighting as a phone s*x operator. LOL Seriously!

My neighbor's mother has been doing transcription for auto insurance companies for years. Maybe reach out to your insurance rep and see if they do that sort of thing?

I would definitely give it a try. I worked as an insurance transcriptionist for about five years. I picked up tapes (from my neighbor's house actually) and transcribed telephone conversations between the insurance agents and the driver's of cars who had been in accidents. I made some great money, (very easy work) but unfortunately, they went digital and hired an actual transcription company to do their work and I was out of a job.

and it can really tough. The sound quality is bad a lot of the time - everyone is using their cell phone to call in accidents and whatever claim they have. A lot of emotion and background noise (think freeway/streets). Not really worth it anymore. Most of the big insurance companies have in-house transcription departments for the interviews and interrogations, for lack of a better word lol

There's a ton of general (non-medical) transcription work out there for people with their own equipment who want to work from their homes. There's a company called Allegis that's hiring now that deals with insurance and law enforcement transcription. Google "transcription forums" and you'll find all kinds of good info.

Don't know how close you are to a college or university, but I did "note service" for classes at the law school at a university. Those kids paid big bucks for class note transcription (not always the best quality audio, mind you) -- but it was like going to college for free!

That is really interesting. Unfortunately, there is not a law school nearby but there is a small college. How did that work exactly?

You have to be able to type swear words and work with some very disturbing things that happen in our society (homicides/child & elderly crimes), but that stuff doesn't bother me. And, of course, pass a in-depth background check.

I am taking a course in paralegal studies right now so that would be right up my alley. I would find that type of work fascinating. Do you have enough work to keep you busy and get good pay? What are the work schedules like?

Tried testing for Accentus, but my foot pedal would not play the voice file. It did absolutely nada. I could not go backward or fast forward. I was able to hear the test voice file just fine, so I went ahead and hit the tab to take the test. I transcribed 4 words, went to back up, and I couldn't. Hello all, I have been in the transcription business now for 8 years and I have yet to find a comfortable chair! Comfort is everything when you are trying to stay in one spot to get a decent line count and when your butt is numb or tailbone hurts it's hard to do that! Can anyone give me insight as to what I may be doing wrong here? I applied to a large company as an IC for evening shift. I passed the first interview, took the test and was told I scored very high and the QA score on the testing was 99.9%. I have 20 years experience. I have done straight transcription (250 plus lines per hour) and voice recognition (400 plus lines per hour) and was willing to do either one, was willing to work Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening shifts.& ...

not really feasible to look for another job outside home. I live in a very small town and care for my aging mother who is not in the best of health. I am about to take on an account where I work in the hospital's VPN. Their VPN blocks the internet entirely. I am used to quickly going to very good websites for dosages of drugs, spelling of difficult words and meanings of certain words which docs may say out of context. So I've started pounding pavement..but switched to calling first to ask if I may bring my business card and a flyer outlining my services to them.
