Ideas on chairs - numbbutt

Posted: Jul 18, 2013

Hello all,

I have been in the transcription business now for 8 years and I have yet to find a comfortable chair! Comfort is everything when you are trying to stay in one spot to get a decent line count and when your butt is numb or tailbone hurts it's hard to do that!  Could you please share what kind of chairs you all have?  I am determined to buy one this weekend even if it is outrageously expensive!

TIA

Not a chair, but... - what I use. sm

Thanks to a suggestion on this forum a couple years ago, I now use a FitBall seating disc, an inflatable "cushion" and balance exercise disc. It is also supposed to help strengthen abs, but I cannot vouch for that. : )

thank you, I've never heard of those, but will look into it - numbbutt

Thank you :)

Thanks for the great suggestion! - sm

I just ordered one. I know my back always feels better on a balance ball, but I was never sold on those balance ball chairs. This seems like the perfect solution.

There are different sizes for sale. I ordered the one with the smooth surface, which has a depth of 3 inches. The one with the bumpy surface only has a depth of 1 inch.

I recent got a Serta office chair - and I quite like it

I had a cheapo chair from Sam's club and had a terrible time with my butt aching. Terrible. I splurged and got this one and have been thrilled with it. It was on sale when I got it, even so I didn't spend as much as it is marked. Go to Office Depot or Office Max and sit in all of the chairs that they have out.

The one thing I have learned at this point is not to skimp on something that I spent 10 hours or more of my day in. I'll pinch pennies everywhere else, but never again on my chair.

beauty, i need one with no arms! - mtr

Most office chair arms can be removed easily - Ive done several myself (sm)

Though I keep coming back to the same very old office chair and my homemade foam cushions that I combine "just so" in order to be able to work without being in agony after an hour!

something to try - Des

Buy a foam mattress topper. Cut it into pieces that will fit the seat and/or back of your chair, and adjust/layer to what's comfortable. Use a small blanket/throw for a cover.

For a back support pillow, use small pieces of this same foam in a pillow case.

If you use several pieces of foam and they won't stay together, use a needle and thread to stitch them to each other.

Thank you all for your responses! - numbbutt

Thank you all so much for taking the time to answer my question. I think for the time being I will try Des's response and get an egg crate mattress topper and try that. I do think I need a chair with no arms, as I started getting tendinitis in both of my elbows, but when I adjusted myself in not using those arm rests, it went away. Thank you all again. :)

I was thinking - numbutt2

one of those giant balls might be good. Supposed to tone the abs too I think.

Chair - buns

Steelcase Leap chair. I found them online and located a place where I could try them out. They are completely adjustable - seat pan depth, arms, back, lumbar, etc. I have had this over a year and love it.

Chair - Lissybell

Depends on your budget. I have a Herman Miller Mirra chair. It is so ergonomically comfortable. It does have arms but they are adjustable. This chair solved my back problems. Cloth-covered chairs with padding over wood are really bad for your back. The chair I have cost around 750 bucks but to me, well worth the price. You can find knock-offs cheaper.

Because of a handicap, I have to use a recliner. I put the mouse on the right arm, footpedal on the left to use with elbow or use under my arm, and keyboard on a pillow.

What Type Of Chairs Do You All Use?
Dec 04, 2012

Hi All, I am pretty sure I have either carpal tunnel or cubital tunnel syndrome.   I went to a hand surgeon because of numbness in my hands and fingers.  I feel tinging throughout all of my fingers most of the time.  I did at nerve conduction study and need a more in depth one because of the abnormalities.  Anyway, sorry for the description, but I'm wondering if it could be related to my chair.  My office chair has arms and I notice I do rest my elbows on ...

Does anyone have a heads up on a good, comfortable chair I can order online? I just moved into a new apartment and need a much better chair than the one I have. I used to think the more you paid, the better the chair but I've learned that's not true whatsoever. What's your chair like? ...

Ergonomic Kneeling Chairs - Anyone Tried One?
Jun 05, 2012

Hello - My knees are a bit sensitive and I'm wondering if anyone out there who also has sensitive knees has ever tried one of these kneeling office chairs.  They're supposed to be quite good for the back and posture, though as I said, I'm a wee concerned about the knees. Anyone?  Thanks so much in advance. ...

Help! Need Some Ideas.
May 24, 2012

Well this whole transcription thing is not going well. Duh! With a really bad work schedule, an hour commute each way and now the threat of the hospital outsourcing our department, I am trying to think of something I can do from home besides work for peanuts for a MTSO. I am expecting my first child soon and really want to be home with him.  Does anyone have a friend or family member who has successfully implemented her own business (perhaps with a transcription background) and if so, ...

Any Ideas?
Dec 11, 2013

Tried testing for Accentus, but my foot pedal would not play the voice file.  It did absolutely nada.  I could not go backward or fast forward.  I was able to hear the test voice file just fine, so I went ahead and hit the tab to take the test.  I transcribed 4 words, went to back up, and I couldn't.  Any suggestions as to why my stinking foot pedal would not work?  It works fine when I am transcribing for my present service.    ...

Deskjob Munchy Ideas
Jan 30, 2012

Hey fellow MTs, I don't know about any of you, but I constantly desire munchies or something of the like at my desk while I'm working.  As my waistline has been increasing steadily over the past few years, I was wondering if any of you have any healthy or even somewhat healthy munchy ideas.  So far I've gone from M&Ms and Hershey Kisses to peanuts and raisins, but...yeah...I wouldn't mind some other ideas.  Thanks all! ...

Ideas For New Comp Plan

I'm considering setting up a college scholarship fund.  It won't be overly large in the beginning, but it will be a start.  I ...

Careers MTs Switch To--Ideas?
Sep 06, 2013

What type of careers are any one of you who are leaving MT or who are former MTs are retraining for? I'm very undecided. Any Ideas How To Get Past Burn Out? Right Now, It's

Portable Computer Cart Ideas?

Needing Help And Ideas Re: Googling V NonGoogling
Jun 14, 2010

I am about to take on an account where I work in the hospital's VPN.  Their VPN blocks the internet entirely.  I am used to quickly going to very good websites for dosages of drugs, spelling of difficult words and meanings of certain words which docs may say out of context.  But now I am about to experience a wall where I cannot get to the internet while typing on the hospital intranet.  Besides having to buy another computer, does anyone have any suggestions (aside from ...

Hi my fellow MTs!  Pinch me I am dreaming!  My SO is building us a new home, and Monday we meet with the kitchen designer/cabinetry dude to layout the kitchen, which will include my office. Problem In Seeking Own Clients. Ideas?
Jan 30, 2013

So I've started pounding pavement..but switched to calling first to ask if I may bring my business card and a flyer outlining my services to them.  Here's why: Besides the percentage that only use EMR, the others fall under a huge umbrella of healthcare chains, and these chains outsource their MTs. Out of about 30 so far, I found ONE chiropractor who was independent and took my info saying they may need an MT soon, and one other who said he's had the same MT for 30+ years (lu ...
