Medical Transcription Week - Jovi_Lady_CMT

Posted: May 21, 2011

I really used to look forward to and loved planning and participating in MT Week.  After all, it is my CHOSEN career and I really love what I do.  However, these past four or five years, being employed by a MTSO, and especially this past week, MT week, I have never felt so unappreciated in my entire career life.  I have literally works my b@lls off this week (Yes, I am female), putting in extra time, helping set up a new account, providing 100% QA where no QA protocol is in place at all for the particular speciality in which I transcribe, and get an e-mail from my manager's manager that my efforts have not gone unnoticed.  Not that I did it for attention, I swear, that is not my motive.  But after having put in five, 14-hour days, I have to ask.  Where's mine?  I keep looking at myself in the mirror, wondering when the "doormat" was stamped across my forehead.  How did I let this happen, after I said "never again" the last time?  Well, I mean it this time!  And, no, now that I've expressed this, I do not feel better; I feel much worse.  At this point, I have to ask myself if it's worth it, and I don't know.  I really don't.  I am the only one who can make a change if I'm not happy, but I don't know how I feel.  Numb is a good way to put it.    I'm tired.

I hear you! I feel the same. I work for a company that, at week's end, is boohooing because their client is complaining that we have not worked long and hard enough to keep up with their bad dictators, and some reports are sitting as long as 24 hours without being completed (can you imagine? An entire 24 hours!). Of course, those jobs that are submitted as high priority do get top priority handling.

Anyway, the MTSO is pretty much demanding that all MT staff (all ICs) work extra this weekend. If the IC already is scheduled to work 8 hours today, he/she is expected to work 12 or more. Actually, it seems to me that they would prefer that the MT work 20 hours or so, take a short nap, and return to work another 20.

At the end of MT week, I am amazed that this same company could not take the time to even send out a "HAPPY MT WEEK" email to the MTs who they are now begging to work like machines.

I feel the same as you; never have I felt so unappreciated and used. Frankly, I'm used up.

I also agree that we teach people how to treat us, and I am determined to at least set limits where my own work is involved. I do not trust that anyone else will join me. I will not launch a strike in which I am the only one because, as the only one striking, I will be regarded simply as some kind of a lunatic or an MT who has totally lost her mind, at which time, I would likely be fired, become homeless, etc.

The company did a few things; made this big to-do about choosing MT of the Year. Plus, they drew 50 names per day of supposedly only MTs and gave away spa baskets, chocolate baskets, and coffee/tea baskets, and a 42" flat screen TV. But that was it and looking at the names that were drawn daily...AS IF anyone would know anyone; they could be fictitious made up names for all we know, just so the company can continue to stroke their ego and make themselves look good. Hey, COMPANY, even though we are just MTs, we are not stupid. We know what the stock is worth. We know you have more money than God. It would not hurt for you to really show appreciation to your MTs. After all, without them, there would be no company. It would be nice to have continuing education reimbursement, pay annual dues to AHDI for those of us who belong to the association, acknowledge those of us who do belong to AHDI and also acknowledge those of us who take personal time out of our lives to become credentialed and who maintain that credial (CMT or RMT). What ever happened to production bonuses? What ever happened to having fun while you worked? I remember those days, why not bring them back. The morale on several teams that I am aware of is so low, I don't know how some MTs can bear to work each day, especially with certain supervisors who don't have a clue as to what is going on under their noses. I am lucky, though, I have a wonderful supervisor and a halfway decent team, with only one team member who goes out of her way to not play by the rules and gets away with it, but I would rather have this problem than another team I know who has so many problems, it's a tug-of-war daily to force yourself to work. But, when all is said and done, I love my chosen career. It's my niche, my second skin, my life, like the air I breathe. I am an M.T. Correction, C.M.T. That means more to me than anything.

I work for a major metroploation hospital. I am a transcriptionist in Pathology. They make abig production of celebrating Lab Week and do not celebrate MT Week, because "we are a part of the laboratory." This year we decided to celebrate ourselves for MT week We had a cake made of the annual MT Week poster and one made to resemble our old Lanier dictaphone. We each ordered sandwiches from outside, played a couple of games. We passed the poster around the lab for everyone to write a note about transcription and from those names, we drew names to give 10 people $5 gift cards to the coffee shop. After our activities, we offered ice cream and cake to the whole department. It was amazing. We even invited our supervisor who had as much fun as we did. IF NO ONE ELSE SEEMS APPRECIATIVE, APPRECIATE YOURSELVES.

Globespan Medical And MT Week
May 22, 2010

Well, the week has come and gone and did not get anything in regards to MT Week with Globespan Medical out of San Diego, CA.  That hits a person "below the belt"!  You don't feel appreciated for all you do with a company who can't even send out a "thank you" email.  It's not just offshoring that makes a company look bad.  Some of these companies make themselves look bad all by themselves. ...

Medical Transcriptionist Week - WMX
May 14, 2011

Just wondering if anyone from WMX is betting on a token gift for MT week.  Last year we got the Pharmaceutical Word Book to install on our (their) computers.  Did appreciate that.  The year before we got nice BBQ aprons with their logo on it.  This year we got yet another reduction in our ISR wages.  Hoping that was not supposed to be our gift.  I know they don't have to give us anything and expect we might get a general company-wide E-mail telling us how REMA ...

Medical Transcription At Home To Become A Medical Scribe?
Jan 20, 2015

Has anybody left medical transcription at home to become a medical scribe?  I have an opportunity to do so but there aren't any scribes currently in my area and I don't know anyone who has worked as a scribe before.  The scribe position starting pay is almost double what I make as an MT per hour so it is very tempting, I just don't know much about it. ...

U.S. Transcription Non Medical
Sep 01, 2011

I answered an ad for U.S. Transcription posted on MT Jobs, was asked to test, and within an hour of submitting my test I was offered a job.  After my heart came down from a happy dance at an actual job offer, I found I really have some things to think about before I say yes. This would be for 2nd shift, non-medical transcription at 0.06/cpl for straight transcription, 0.03/cpl if a company provided template is used.  I suppose I need to ask what my expected production would be before ...

Non-medical Transcription?
Dec 08, 2012

I'm a 2011 MT grad who posted not long ago looking for advice.  While googling MT companies to apply to, I found some non-medical transcription services, namely one that transcribes dialogue from a video for production/entertainment companies.  This site had instructions and a download to take the test.  What the heck, I'm going to take it and see what happens.  Since MT is practically a dead-end career, I've been trying to come up with ther ways to utilize my ...

Thank You Medical Transcription
Aug 23, 2013

I quit a job a dozen years ago to jump into the "Work At Home" dream.  I had little money, was quite naive, worked from dark to dark with absolutely no help from the small MTSO, who later ripped me off $5,000.  BUT, I learned. After my first experience with "running out of work", I just found more work.  I got unusually lucky and found a job and was MTing again in a few days. That gig gave me nearly 10 years of working for another small MTSO.  I got busy and made tons of mon ...
