I start school in 8 days! - excited

Posted: Aug 12, 2013

I am so freaking excited! I hated college the first time around and didn't finish. I didn't know why I was there, nor what I wanted to do. This time, I'm super psyched to go back. I'm so glad I'm finishing my degree, learning again, accomplishing something, but especially taking steps to leave MT. Anyone else starting school this month?

New school year for me this month - sm

I start school in 2 weeks. Finishing my degree and have 3 semesters left. Technically I'm a senior in college. :)

go to college even though I wasn't wanting to. Like you I had no direction and did not apply myself. I barely passed and dropped out after the first year. I start back Monday and I'm excited but nervous too. I'm taking a heavy load to get where I need to be when I need to declare my major in March.

Tuition is paid, books are bought. Three of my classes are online and I want my assignments now so I can get a jump start.

I'm still not 100% sure what I want to do, but do want that piece of parchment paper.

My advice - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Don't doubt yourself. Have confidence that you can do this. I started last fall. Failed my first test. Was devastated, but I did really good (Dean's list). Sure did change my attitude about this job too. There is so much more potential and opportunity out there. Good luck!

Good luck! nm - excited

I start on the 26th-cancer registry - Still cranky still on the beach

[ In Reply To ..]
Going to school online, taking 2 classes this semester, and if at the end I don't have the urge to stick a pitchfork in my brain, I'll go on.

I went back to school from 1999 to 2001 and finished my BA, but stayed in MT and billing. Now, I have no desire to go back to either one of those. But I worked in oncology for over 25 years, so cancer registry might be a good fit for me. And they waived the medical terminology class requirement because I have a current CMT.

If you have a BA - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
If you have a BA, you do not have to do an associate's degree program! You can simply do a postbaccalaureate certificate in health administration to go straight for the RHIA, which is the end degree for all those community college programs. You can do anything you want with it, including cancer registry, and do it for more money.

The program at the University of Toledo only takes a year or so, making it a much more sensible and economical option than 2 years of community college to qualify for a lower salary.

I have a BS in another field and have been looking closely at UoT myself. - Kitty

[ In Reply To ..]
It makes a LOT of sense. There is so much you can do with that RHIA.

Not going for associate's, just certificate. - Still cranky still on the beach

[ In Reply To ..]
And in addition to waiving the medical terminology requirement, they have also waived me out of "computers 101" because not only have I already taken it, I could TEACH it. They have also waived Intro to Management because I had multiple management courses at the upper division university level for my BA.

I'm going online to Santa Barbara City College because as a California resident, for me it is the cheapest option by far among the cancer registry accredited schools, since I am eligible for the in-state tuition rates.

And I'm really not interested in any other health admin careers at this point. I've had my fill of all the traumas and dramas that happen in pretty much any workplace these days, and the prospect of a higher salary simply isn't enough to tempt me. I just want to make enough money to get by, and if I can do that hiding in a cave compiling cancer statistics from charts, I'll be perfectly content. :)

P.S. But thanks for the suggestion anyway. :) - Still cranky still on the beach NM

I'm one of those that had a high enough test score to get into MModal's program but didn't quite make it.  I had already been looking at one of the Coding schools but wanted to give myself a week or so to think it over and not make a knee jerk move after being passed over by MModal.  Today, I picked up the phone and signed on with the school I've had my eye on and I start on Monday!  I'm actually reeeeally excited - and surprisingly I'm actually feeli ...

Has Anyone Ever Gone Through Allied School For Coding? Other School Recommendations?
Jun 24, 2014

I was wondering if anyone has ever gone through Allied School in California for billing & coding.  If so, how was your experience?  Were you able to find work in coding after finishing the course and getting your certification?  I have been a medical transcriptionist for the past 10-11 years and am now looking at getting into coding.  My best friend and I are going to take a course together.   If you wouldn't recommend Allied as a school, who would you reco ...

Coding School - Considering Going To A School
Sep 22, 2011

I am an MT who is considering going to school for coding.  I am thinking about taking the course through Andrews and will probably start next year because I will have to save up some of the money.  I am wondering if you think coding may eventually go the way of medical transcription and be outsourced to India.  I do not think it will so I just wanted to get the opinions of other coders.  I realize it will be a hard course but I think it will be worth the effort.  Any thoughts would be appre ...

Where To Start
Aug 23, 2011

I would like to how you became coders? I saw someone went to Andrews, is that where most of you went?  I was a coder at a local hospital about 12 years ago.  I was taught on the job, no schooling at all.  I know things are changing and have changed significantly since I coded, and the way it sounds ICD-9 is going to ICD-10.  What suggestions would you give someone like me?  I also did transcription and have been doing that for the last 25 or so years, but I do not like t ...

Start Looking Now!
Nov 02, 2014

This is specifically for ambulatory care MTs.  The axe has fallen and it will probably get worse, if that is possible.  I got out a month ago and am I ever happy that I did, after hearing what the new exciting changes are.  But I started applying, testing and even trying out other places months ago, and it took a while to finally find a good small, keep-work-in-the-USA and care about our team company.  Start looking now, because the resumes will be flooding any and all good-s ...

Been Away From MT For 10 Yrs - Where Do I Start?
Jan 05, 2015

I was an MT for 14 years with multi-specialty experience.  I have been out of the field for 10 years.  I am interested in getting back to it.  I have some questions:  -Should I work on Certification before finding a job?  Should I get Registered before Certification? -What equipment/software is generally being used this days for at-home/contractor? -What is the average PPL?  -How does straight transcription compare to VR editor as far as pay? -Right now I live ...

QC Incentive Start?
