I give up. We are going to send all work offshore. sm - MTSO
Posted: May 15, 2012
I have been struggling financially for some time, and I have been approached often by offshore companies. Due to all the bitterness, the nastiness, the ugliness shown by so many here, I have decided to go that route. Yes, I can sleep at night because I don't have to worry about lawsuits that are expensive to fight from bitter MTs that think they are worth more than they are.
There are many MTs out there who are true professionals and worth every penny paid, and they are paid well, but the ugly one win, in this case.
Good luck to all the MTSOs out there. We all know how hard it is and how much work you put into it.
Good luck to all the good MTs who make a good/great living. These types of things have ruined the industry, and you will probably start to be paid hourly and make much less than you have.
I do not own a small service, and this means that a few hundred MTs will be out of work, but I can't do this any more. A few of claim that you have been wronged, but we have been beat down. I hate what this industry has become, and I once loved it.

You pushed me to this. I have also talked to a few other MTSOs who are either considering going offshore or selling to one of the giants.
No matter what we do, it's never enough, and I am tired of the long days, the bashing for no reason and the sense of entitlement. No matter how much we give, someone has a problem with it. I'm just done.
Good luck to you all. I am sure I am not the only one.

If there's one thing I've learned in this life, it's that you have to follow the money. If anyone is leaving the US to go overseas, it's because the money is better, i.e., more money in the traitors' pockets. There has been a lot of feeding at the old MT trough, but now it's drying up, and they're scared. If there's anyone to blame, it is the MTSOs themselves as well as the phony agencies they are in kahoots with, not to mention the robbers selling the "technology" that DOESN'T WORK but has been forced in and has cost everyone a lot of money while these companies line their pockets. And, the one and only resource they ever really needed, the American Transcriptionist, represented now by these 13 MTs and this law suit (thank you 13) is finally saying enough, and they're (MTSOs) scared, scared because if everything blows up, they are going to be the first to go. So as HOAX says, don't let any of this throw you. It's an age-old tactic. Pass out guilt and demand a lot of pity. Keep going, 13!! We are still somewhat free in this country, and you have every right to do what you're doing. And you can add me to the many, many, many who stand behind you 100%.
omg, they are not scared of the 13 - heard it all
[ In Reply To ..]
NO ONE is scrared of the 13. I think you all are wishing that these MTs are going to change the MT world. All they are going to do is get paid minimum wage for the time they sat waiting for work (required by law) and then the rest of the work is going to be shifted overseas. What do you think Transcend is AFRAID OF? Delusional!!!!

You're missing the point entirely. It's not about getting piddling back wages. THE JIG IS UP. YOUR SCAM IS OUTED. So what if you send "the work" overseas. Everyone knows that garbage comes back from overseas. Do you think you and your garbage from overseas (without the intervention an American MT) is the only alternative for medical transcription? You're certainly not too big to fail. You do the American MTs a favor by sending "the work" overseas. It forces us to stop being content with the pigeon hole we've been shoved into by yourselves and AHDI and the likes, and accepting the smaller and smaller piles of crumbs that you offer. We, the American MTs have the goods to offer, not you, the middle-man MTSO with all your added weight, or some government lobbyist, and certainly not someone peddling something called voice recognition (a misnomer if I've ever heard one). I am sad for what this field has become also. I too used to love what I do. Now your 100 employees who have to look for work (even the good, bad and bitter) and will have a reality check on how things are in this field. How many of us as professionals with expertise in the field of medical language have lost the good wages and are now working for slave wages as that is all that is offered anymore. I used to make a good living in this field but now it is cut by 50%-60%, not all by MTSO but by technology and the ability for this to be done in other countries. Some of us dreamed that we would continue to make a good living until we retired, like our parents and grandparents who were able to stay in one job or position their entire lives and retire. It is sad very sad.

I know some MTs make better money, but why would they want to crap on the rest of us? Something's fishy.
Anti lawsuit - Skeptical MT
[ In Reply To ..]
I am not anti-lawsuit, and I don't work for an MTSO, but you need to understand that you do not represent all MTs everywhere. Personally, I would have made different demands/requests: Company paid health insurance not contingent on production for one thing, higher line rates, i.e., the same pay across the board, and a guaranteed wage considerably higher than $7.25 an hour. No one pays people to do research and look things up during work time, that has always been part of the job, so that one will probably get thrown out, I'm sorry to say. I'm not trying to "crap" on anyone, but you need to recognize your own worth and start making some serious demands that truly will benefit all of us. Sorry, but for me $7.25 an hour isn't going to cut it. You have lawyers at your beck and call, and could really bring about some serious change if you chose to, good luck.
to skeptical MT - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
I am not part of the 13 or the lawsuit either, and I am not an MTSO, and I understand where you are coming from and agree I would like all of those things you mention as well. However, legally those are not things that can be addressed. What CAN be addressed is where they are breaking labor laws. I agree that research is an inherent part of our job as well and this just was not ever an issue before our huge pay cuts; now it makes it difficult to make enough to pay basic bills if much time is spent doing anything other than typing.
I don't know if this lawsuit will accomplish anything either, it may be that the pendulum has swung so far that they will just send all of the work offshore. But one has to take a stand somewhere, and Transcend insisting on altering time cards was just too much!
I'm curious - Skeptical MT
[ In Reply To ..]
If you're willing to accept $7.25 an hour, things must really be bad. If you can pay bills on that, I want your bills. It may be Federal minimum wage, but for those of us living in states such as mine with a minimum wage higher than the federal rate (WA, $9.04/hr), by law they would be required to pay MTs that rate. Transcend training pay is $12.00 an hour, so the plaintiffs are taking a big step backward. At some point, people must have been drawing a full paycheck, why couldn't the guaranteed wage be based on a person's past production and paid that way? Don't tell me the other things can't be addressed, because they can. The lawyers could negotiate a settlement that could include some of the other issues. If this is about representing MTs collectively, then it's time to get it out in the open.
What are you talking - about
[ In Reply To ..]
Of course getting paid for research was part of the job. Of course finding cc addresses and correct patient was part of the job. We used to be paid by the hour with bonuses based on production. Other professions that telecommute get paid hourly. If you are going to scoff at that, is it any different than benefits not contingent on production? An hourly wage not contingent on production? If you goofed off all day long it would be evident and you wouldn't have a job for long.
Instead, we have been reduced to having spyware installed as part of the platform and we are tracked like animals. And bonuses set up that no one can meet. I've never seen evidence of anyone making a good wage (and I don't mean some vague "more than minimum wage" "I'm happy") at an MTSO, but some people claim to be among the few.
What I am talking about - Skeptical MT
[ In Reply To ..]
Is that you claim to be representing all MTs in your lawsuit. I could never work for an MTSO because I can't afford the insurance. I am self supporting, it's a huge issue for me, and I do think it needs to be addressed. If I were filing a law suit in regard to a wage dispute, I would not settle for $7.25 an hour. If I were asking for back wages and an hourly wage, I'd expect to be paid based on my highest production rate. I'm not scoffing at anyone or anything, but I'm obviously ignorant because I've never suffered the way you have. The things that are happening to you are not my fault. I do get paid hourly on site and do make a good wage. I have telecommuted but was never paid hourly. The research I did was on my own time. It was never tracked, but obviously when I wasn't transcribing I wasn't producing and I didn't get paid. I'm glad you're happy to settle for minimum wage, I never would be. I hope your lawsuit turns out to be all that you are wishing for.

Instead of doing whatever they can to help rid the MT workscape of the off-shore companies, they give in and join their ranks by selling to them. I don't know the infamous 13, so I can't comment on their work ethic. I don't think you can, either. Nor have I ever worked for an MTSO. But from what I hear, there are many MTs out there getting cheated out of wages - in the form of "no jobs available" (NJA), in the form of having to work 14 hours a day to make required lines (due to NJA), in the form of having to falsify their timesheets so that it "looks like" they only worked 40 hours, and then they can get "make-up pay". Make up pay? That's interesting.
I don't think any of this is about "bitter MTs that think they are worth more than they are".

Furthermore, if you honestly think you can get Pakistanis, Indians or Filipinos or machines to do all your work for you without having Americans proofread and clean up the mess so it doesn't look like gibberish from an alien planet, by all means do. Or are you just a liar and wont give a business name because you dont really have one?
Why do MTSO's pay MTs 50% less money when speech does not require 50% less work. I used to make 9 cents for text and now get 4.5 for speech. I think 6 cents for speech would be much more reasonable. Why cant MTSO's do that...can any out there explain? Maybe then MTs would not feel so beat down.

You say YOU have been beat down. You say YOU have been struggling financially. Do you not understand the "bitterness, ugliness, and nastiness" you speak of.
You, nameless, come on an MT board claiming that your MTSO, nameless of course, is going to put "a few hundred" MTs out of work, and you can sleep at night. Consider the following.
Have you walked in our shoes? Have you sat at a computer waiting for work for up to 14 hours a day, trying to get in 8 hours, or the minimum line count? Have you actually worked 60 hours a week, only to be told you cannot get paid for more than 40? Have you been forced to work on clunker platforms that cause you to spend 30-40% longer doing work that you get paid less for? Have you had your pay docked because of lousy dictators that even QA cannot understand? Have you had to work for free looking up demos because dictators are too lazy to give them. Have you done too numerous to count cc's for free. How much time have you had to spend TYPING in a VR platform to get 4 cpl or less because that particular dictator does not belong on VR? Do you clock in and out and in and out continuously from 7 a.m. until 10 p.m.? Have you actually had to train the off-shore people to take your job? Have you been degraded like that?
How do you think some of the MTs have been sleeping at night?

But YOU would be so much happier and wealthier if the transcriptionists here would just put up and shut up, if we just took it and didn't complain? Wow. Blame the victims. Our jobs have been taken over by MTSOs who treat the MTs like cogs in a wheel, with less than ideal working conditions, barely paying minimum wage, and who threaten to "offshore" --and we are not supposed to vent and complain? It's OUR fault that you supposedly cannot make a living? I bet your living is WAAAAAY more than what we have been reduced to. You are so full of crap it's unbelievable. You cannot be for real, and I actually do not believe you own an MTSO, but are a liar and poser. It's not this board that has ruined your supposed career; it it YOU. For the smaller MTSOs, they are not making money. Several of my friends are now out of business and have been for some time. It is the physicians who are not paying decent wages, wanting the sun and the moon for 6 cpl. Even if you get them to pay 10-12 cpls, then you pay the transcriptionists, editors, platform fees, phone lines, equipment, software, IT, etc. The list goes on. For the smaller MTSOs, the transcriptionists make more than the MTSOs, and most MTSO owners have to transcribe just to stay afloat. We have to get the physicians to take us seriously and pay decent wages.
MTSOs - Skeptical MT

From what I have observed, the MTSOs undercut each other and charge their clients less in order to get the account. In hospital settings or other large facilities, physicians have very little control over who does the transcription gets done, all they care about is that the work gets done. These are usually administrative decisions and the facility pays the bill.

Coding Sent Offshore Nov 21, 2012I tried posting before but not sure if it went through. I have been considering coding, having been an MT for nearly 20 years, but do you think coding jobs are likely to be sent offshore like many MT jobs have been? I would hate to study very hard and invest more money and time in a career that could go down the tubes like MT has, but would like more opportunity for growth and advancement. ...
Now That We Know Work Is Going Offshore Sep 06, 2013being fired but made to stay on the job and train your replacement. How demeaning! They get to pick off the easy jobs and we are left with the c**p. ...
Outshourcing/offshore Aug 07, 2014I am new to the MT industry I have just graduated this year. I have been trying to find this out but for some odd reason while companies do it there doesn't seem to be anyone who can give me an answer. Why can companies send work over to say India and it's called outsourcing and there doesn't seem to be a problem, yet if I want to work outside my country I can't and I'm considered offshore? Like really how does that work? People from another ...
Fiesa Offshore Only Mar 04, 2015I have noticed in all the Fiesa reports/scores that NOT ONE is from an onshore QA. Every report has been checked by offshore QAs. Has anyone had an English first language QA? Just seems frustrating to have a ESL check an ESL report by a doctor from yet another language transcribed by an American transcriptionist. I have also noticed that if you get 100% one week, guaranteed the next week you get bottom scores the next. Balances out to the .08 per line between the weeks. ...
OFFSHORE INQUIRES FOR US BUSINESS Nov 05, 2009As the owner of a medical transcription company, I get 4-5 inquires a week to send our work to India, Phillipines, and now even South Africa (I believe the last one was). My reply to them politely is "We do not send work out of the USA." Hopefully if more companies do this, the work would stay in the US and save our jobs. ...
Tax Breaks For Companies That OFFSHORE! Jan 28, 2010Anybody rejoicing over the fact that we may be finally stopping the offshoring of jobs overseas? I think we should have a party! ...
Does ATSI Offshore To India? Sm May 27, 2010I have an interview with them. I did some archiving to see if there's any info on this board about them. Wondered if they offshored to India. Their website doesn't say anything about it. Their ad says US MTs only.
Thanks! ...
Does Transcend Offshore Their Work? Jun 04, 2010I was told by local hospital that they switched from MedQuist to Transcend and that they believed Transcend did not offshore. The woman in charge of Medical Records Dept. said they wanted to keep dictation done in the US by US transcriptionists. I told her I would find out for sure and call her back with what I know. I searched archives and found some posts stating Transcend offshores at night and on weekends. Can anyone working with Transcend let me know for sure whether or not they definitely ...
Companies That -do Not- Offshore That Use EditScript? Mar 06, 2011This is, of course, not a technical help question, but my original post was deleted from the Company Board because I mentioned a "platform." This post is also less likely to be seen here than there, but so be it.
I'm looking for the names of any companies that use EditScript/eScription that DO NOT offshore and pay more than 3 cpl for editing. Transtech has already been mentioned.
Thanks for any help. ...
Transtech And Companies Who Say They Do Not Offshore. Jun 01, 2011Noticed that all we have are foreign dictators and the difficult dictations. A lot of the hospitals use 2 services and those that offshore are known to send OUT all the easy dictators because....the foreign countries cannot understand the difficult dictators either...not even if the doctor is from their own country. They have to send them easy work so it does not look AS bad when it comes back and the doctors don't complain too much, or then do not want their wor ...
Yet Another Reason It's Unwise To Offshore Jul 13, 2011Look at what just happened in Mumbai today. Three terrorist bombs in the busiest business sectors, killing 20 people and injuring scores of others. Something that seems to happen from time to time, currently being blamed on their rival, Pakistan. (Another favorite U.S. offshoring destination).
Those blasts could have just as easily hit one of our MTSOs' main offices, servers, IT techs, QA, etc. over there. There just isn't the same level of security ...
