Does anybody still keep a log book? - MT

Posted: Dec 05, 2011

I would like to start using my laptop in a couple of weeks (MQ upgrade) and it seems like a good time to give up the log book. I have been keeping one since I started 10 years ago. No patient info, just job #, work type and length. I just like the idea of keeping them honest, not really trusting them, although I only find a missing job once or twice a year. Just would like some feedback. I feel it may be slowing me down in between jobs. TIA.

Ever since ASR, I stopped doing that. ASR has slowed me down enough and cut my pay. There just isn't time. We're already getting rooked, so what's a job or 2 a year.

I don't work for MQ, but I keep one any way of all my work. That way if there is ever any question, I have it recorded. It can't possibly slow you down enough to take the chance of not getting paid what you are owed. Whose to say their computer won't crash some day and you have no record of your work.

I still keep one. - Shipwecked

I just use a steno pad and list the job number and length. I occasionally have missing jobs. I don't compare each job number to what they list, but I do count the number of jobs, and if it differs, then I can see which job they've missed. Also, if the system crashes (mine or their's) I can call the help desk and see if a job I sent in actually got there.

I still keep one also - elite bouncer

Job number, work type and whether it was ASR or straight type.

Then if I am audited, I hightlight that report number and list the score.

Once I got a job back that I didnt even type! Got someone elses job... good thing for my list.

I do - otherwise I'd lose track of what i was doing. - Also, I make notations on my log - sm

about things such as time of day, or what accounts I was on, when I get the dreaded "NJA" alert. I also jot down start time at beginning of shift, end time at end of shift, and breaks I take during the day (when I remember to write them down), JUST IN CASE I might need that information to back me up as to the REAL amount of time I spend working, which is far more than my time card shows.

And if I have trouble with my PC, or a power failure, or the company software, that gets documented. If there was a problem with a report, or anything else out of the ordinary, I try to document it. That way, should I ever find myself at the Labor Board filing suit for all my unpaid hours at work, I'll have plenty of information to back me up.

I still keep a log sheet: date/time; length/facility/job # column for notes, etc. But then, I worked for the Feds for 30 years so used to CYA & documentation. For me, it is worth the time.

Got Out And Wrote A Book!
May 19, 2015

Hi everyone! I had to come here to share the good news.  I've been an MT for 19 years and just got out last November.  I was really getting tired of the way the industry was going, and wrote when the work was slow to none.  I've finally made my dream come true and published on Amazon just today! I hope you don't mind me coming here and sharing this. If I can do this, so can you!  Self-publishing on Kindle Direct Publishing is easy when you follow their guide ...

How Many MTs Use The Book Of Style?
Nov 07, 2014

How many MTs use the Book of Style?  Am I the only one who thinks this is a total rip off just like dues to the former AAMT were?  Is not this self promotion to enrich oneself three times now and passing this propaganda off to MTSOs as the "industry standard?" I know I sure did not get a vote as to what is and what is not this so-called "industry standard" and have not used that book in years!  Poverty wages are now the "industry standard."  Who else is fed up with this load of BS? ...

The Anatomy Coloring Book
Oct 26, 2009

For any MT students or new MTs I would suggest this book.  It's been around for years.  It has very detailed, labeled drawings of anatomical structures that you color in (need colored pencils or fine-tipped markers)  I had one of these years and years ago (before I knew what an MT was).  Helps you visualize the anatomy and remember the names of the structures.  I had fun with it...  ...

Life's Little Instruction Book
Jun 29, 2010

I recently picked up a little book that was sitting on my bookshelf. It is called "Life's Little Instruction Book" It was written by a father for his son, and turned into a coffee table/bathroom book. It has 511 'life lessions' that one father wanted to tell his son. If you have the chance, you should pick it up. I thought I would share a few with all of you, I know I needed the reminder today: 1. Compliment three people every day. 99. Think big thoughts, but relish small p ...

Book Of Style Useless
Mar 16, 2011

It would seem that the AAMT/AHDI just look for ways to make money on their ole' book of style.  Changing from one term in one book, to using it differently in a second, and now the third is different from that.  What is the fourth going to do, go back to the first use.  Throw them all out. They don't know what they are doing.  Their transcription bible is useless to train from, and they charge a whole lot of money for useless. (Just a little frustrated, wouldn' ...

Book Of Style Version 3
Nov 02, 2011

I have a question for those working for a hospital as an employee in-house or at home.  I work at home for a hospital and we were told we must buy our own book of style version 3 but still expected to maintain high QA status.  There is only 1 book in-house for all to share.  I would think that the company should invest in buying each employee this book to improve production and it would be a positive move.  They refuse to do this.  I brought it up in a meeting and told t ...

Book Of Style Nonsense?
Jun 21, 2012

I have been working in transcription for 31 years.  What is the deal with all this Book of Style nonsence?  Doctors don't care if a comma is in the right place or not, or if a drug is capitalized or now.  They just want the correct measurements, dosages, symptoms, body part, etc. typed in the correct document on the correct patient. You ask a doctor what the Book of Style is and they would probably just give you a dumb look.  Who is making money off of this?   It's just the crazi ...

Since I was terminated February 11, I have been reviewing some things in case I need to apply for some MT job in the future.  When I worked for M-Modal, I was supplied with Book of Style, 2nd edition.  I now have a copy of the 3rd edition, and they say some things are changed.
