current CMT exam is being rebranded and renamed to Certified Healthcare Documentation Specialist (CHDS). Since you earned your CMT before January 2011*, the Credentialing Commission for Healthcare Documentation has created a simple way for you to bridge to the updated credential. The CHDS Bridge Course is now available and open for enrollment. Sign up today to be among the first CMTs to earn their CHDS!

Voluntarily Bridge Your CMT to the CHDS
- To add the additional blueprint domains to your certified skill set and earn the expanded CHDS designation, you may do so by taking the online CHDS Bridge Course. It is a self-paced online course that must be completed in 8 weeks. Upon successful completion of the course and final exam you will earn your CHDS credential.
- The CHDS Bridge Course addresses only the blueprint objectives and additional knowledge domains that were added to the exams in 2011. The course curriculum covers the 15 objectives across two knowledge domains from the current credentialing exam blue print. The objectives represent advanced clinical practice, advanced surgical practice, health information technology and standards, and speech recognition technology.
- Your current certification cycle will not change upon completion of the course. You will earn 10 CECs (4 CM, 4 TW, 1 MTT, and 1 PD) for successfully completing the CHDS Bridge Course, which may be applied toward your current cycle.
- The first course starts October 1. Registration is open until September 25. Thereafter, the course will begin on the first of each month, with registration open from the 1st through the 25th of the month prior to the start of the course.
- The CHDS Bridge Course costs $45 for eligible members, with a list price of $70.

The ACDIS has a certification called the CCDS, which is something MTs could aim to transition into.
Maybe it would be worth it to get the AHDI thing ... somebody might confuse it with the CCDS and hire you.

I don't think I am surprising anyone with the observation that CHDS or CMT credentials don't help you get a job. I have applied at several companies and I don't even get a courtesy of a response--even from companies that say they "care if you are certified." The bottom line for the companies is to pay the lowest you can and quality doesn't matter. No surprise here. ...

I got my CMT originally in 1990 and was continuously certified through August of 2014 but let it lapse due to its "value" in the industry diminishing (no one EVER asked me for certification through the years). I will be graduating from TTC's Medical Transcription class soon so I am now wondering if I should join AHDI and if I should take the RMT. I have read the information on the AHDI site which of course points to the pros of both. But I have also read posts from seasoned MTs who have not joined AHDI and some of them say that taking the RMT (or CMT for that matter) carries very little, if any, weight when locating a job. My membership has expired and in today's mail was a membership renewal request from AHDI. I tossed it in the trash. I was looking for the BOS, 3rd edition. This only comes in the book format and on-line yearly subscription. It does not come on a CD-ROM.
