Which of the AHIMA-approved coding programs are good quality? - codingquestions

Posted: May 08, 2014

Has anyone taken any of the AHIMA-approved coding programs and gotten credentials and a job? I'm just wondering which of them prepare you adequately to pass the credential tests and get hired.

I looked on the AHIMA site at the distance learning coding programs they recommend, and here they are:

Camden County College

Career Step

Dakota State University

Great Falls College Montana State University

Lone Star College

North Dakota State College of Science

Santa Barbara City College

Shoreline Community College

Trident Technical College

Does anyone here have any experience with the programs at these schools? (Yes, I know about Andrews).

Suggestion - sm

Programs do not necessarily teach the same thing even if they are approved by AHIMA, offered by a college, etc.

I think you are assuming that every AHIMA-approved course prepares you for the same exams. That is not the case. Check the requirements for AHIMA's CCS and CCS-P exam very carefully. At least one of the programs you asked about doesn't meet them, so you could spend 2 full years in that program, spend $$$, and then discover that the program didn't teach enough for you to do inpatient coding or for you to take the CCS. Those programs might only qualify for the CCA exam, which they'll think is just great, but employers won't.

I suggest that you make a chart comparing the programs. List the content, the cost, the time, etc. List the credentials that they state you can qualify to take.

I think you also need to be clear on what you mean by "recommend." The approval is not a "recommendation." It is just a statement that the program met the minimum requirements for a coding program. That can be just outpatient coding, too.

Schools that accept federal funds have to disclose the cost and outcomes of programs. It will be on their website somewhere. That tells you how many students are able to find jobs.

Email the schools and ask them about employment. Ask them about the program's pass rates on the CCS and CPC exams.

No, I'm not assuming that... sm - codingquestions

No, I'm not assuming that. If I were, then I wouldn't be asking which ones prepare you for the certification tests and for gainful employment. Thanks for your input.

I think it depends on what you want to do. I went to - sm

Great Falls College Montana State University. It was an okay program, but it did not prepare me for coding at all. The instructor for the coding classes was just awful. I really learned nothing from her. It did prepare me to pass the RHIT exam, though. If you want to code, I highly recommend getting the CCS and attending a program that will prepare you for it. I've read good things about Andrews. What credential are you looking to get?
I'll cross that school of my list sm - codingquestions

Thank you. I want to get a CCS and a CPC.

AHIMA Approved ?
Nov 03, 2011

I just checked the AHIMA website for coding programs and I noticed that they have Career Step on their list of "AHIMA approved coding programs" but I could not find Andrews School listed at all on their site.  Is AHIMA approval for coding as important as AHDI approval for transcription programs? Everyone recommends Andrews for coding but Im confused now. Could someone explain please. Also if it is important can you please let me know where you went to school for coding? Is Andrews Approved By AHIMA?
Sep 21, 2010

It seems like a lot of people on this board have gone or are going to Andrews for coding.  I have seen a lot of jobs for coders where you obviously need to be certified but also have done your education through an AHIMA approved program.  Isn't Andrews NOT approved through AHIMA?  Wouldn't it be better for me to just do my training through AHIMA?  Seems like a lot of money to spend on a program that isn't recognized by AHIMA. ...

AHIMA Basic Coding Program, Anyone Else Take This?
Apr 27, 2015

Hello, I am currently enrolled in AHIMA's Basic Coding Program.  Has anyone else done this program?  It seems that the CCS is mentioned as being the certficiate to get, is the CCA no good?  This is all new to me, so any advice would be appreciated!  I have done transcription for 17 years, but my company was outsourced, so time for a change.  I am really enjoying learning coding.  It is an online course, so I hope it will be enough to prepare me for a coding pos ...

Can Someone Compare Andrews To AHIMA Basic Coding Course?
Feb 07, 2013

they call this a 12-course basics.  it says 2000, plus you need an additional 290 +225 for the required anatomy and physiology course, which you must at least get a C before you can proceed with the coding.  they also suggest 35 a year for becoming a member.  books are also a lot extra, looks like.   says 4 clusters of 15-week courses, that is 60 weeks, yes?   anyone have experience with this course?  call me gun-shy, but this is the organization who threw MT unde ...

Apr 10, 2013

Hi everyone! My place of employment has approached me about the possibility of training as an outpatient coder within the year but wants me to take a CPT and ICD-9 course, no certification needed, just something stating I took these two courses.  Would you who have been through this suggest I take AHIMA's coding basics (she says I only need the 4 total courses - CPT (2), ICD-9 (2) or take something like an online AAPC course i.e. coderclass.com?  Can the AHIMA courses be ...

Two-year Coding Programs
Oct 06, 2013

There was a post elsewhere about a coding program requiring 2 years.  If you are considering coding, please be aware that a 2-year program would be very unusual.  I have not seen one, other than possibly some for-profit diploma-mill "billing coding degree" affairs, which I don't think anyone here would recommend.   Please be careful that you understand what the requirements and legitimate options are.     ...

Coding Programs - Santa Barbara City College
May 20, 2010

I just registered for Santa Barbara City College's HIT program online.  Has anyone else taken their program?  I really needed to find a school that was accredited because I qualify for FAFSA to help me pay for it.  I looked into Andrews and also AHIMA, but all were WAY too expensive and you can't receive financial aid.  If anyone can give me information on the Santa Barbara courses, if you've taken it through them, please do!  Thanks!  (I'm ...

So My 98.8% Quality Wasn't Good Enough...
Nov 05, 2013

Here's how I handled being ridiculed by my TM for "allowing" my Fiesa post audits to slip to below 99% - even though the average with the QC scores was well above 99%. I found another job.  One that isn't ridiculous in their QA and believes that the standard 98% quality is excellent.  I'm not asked to spend hours of my time "off the clock" reviewing QA mistakes and have not had them incorrectly count off because all scores are reviewed by a head person before they are s ...

Are There Any Good Quality Fairly Inexpensive Alternatives To ExpressScribe?
Sep 28, 2013

Was given some sample dictation to listen to and could play it on Google Chrome and it sounded very clear, but when I played it with Express Scribe (even using the special audio processes) it sounded a lot worse - more like in a tin can and a bit scratchy. For the "real" dictation, I'll have to use ExpressScribe or some other player. Thanks for the suggestions. ...

Can You Succeed In Coding If You Aren't Good At MT

All the other fields academically I did VERY well at but MT was a struggle for me because I could never dev ...

Coding :: Do You Feel The Compensation Is Good?
Jan 08, 2013

I have had my own medical transcription business for almost 30 years.  Recently, my largest client informed me they are going to start using a template that docs will fill out when they see patients.  I am losing a lot of income and really need to replace it.  My friend told me that coding is a good thing to get into now.  I don't want to spend the time and/or money learning that if the pay is not good and the jobs aren't plentiful.  I have tons of medical transcription experience ...

Could Anyone Recommend Good Medical Coding Websites?
Jan 31, 2012

Hello, I am becoming disenchanted with the medical transcription profession and how it has become less lucrative (although some may disagree). I wanted to look into medical coding as an alternative at-home (remote) or in-office job.  I was hoping someone could recommend a few good websites that discuss the profession, how to prepare for it, how long training typically takes before you can "launch yourself", how lucrative it could be if you really apply yourself, and so on. Learn From My Mistake About Picking A Good Coding Program
Jan 20, 2012

I am in my last semester of an HIT program at my local community college.  This program is accredited through CAHIIM.  I actually found this program on the AHIMA website as an approved AHIMA coding program and was so excited that it was in my hometown.  Well, almost two years later and $4000 in student debt, I still have no idea how to code.  Sure, I'm great at Math 101 and English 101 and my anatomy is amazing, but I have no idea how to code.  One class that I have ...
