need some real advice on medical coding programs - confusedStudent

Posted: Oct 23, 2013

I need some real advice on medical coding programs. I feel like I have been searching the internet for weeks and am still at a loss as to what program is the best and if I should start now or wait for ICD10 to come out. Is a CPC or CCS better or should I get both? Please let me know your thoughts on the best program to attend online.

Andrews - worked for me

If you want to learn how to code without wasting time Andrews will take you there. I wanted to learn to code. I wanted my CCS and CPC-H. That is all I wanted. That is what I got. I learned to code, both inpatient and outpatient with anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, and medical terminology. Intense program that teaches you how to code and enables you to pass both the CCS and CPC-H when you are done. Don't wait for ICD-10. Learn how to code now and then you can ease into ICD-10 easier. Just my opinion. Others may have other good programs they attended. Good luck!

Thanks! - confusedstudent

Thank you for responding!

Another vote for Andrews - Worked for me, too!

After researching for months and weighing my options, I finally chose Andrews and I am so glad I did! Andrews prepares you for both the CPC and the CCS. I already took and passed the CPC. I graduated and I am now studying for the CCS.

Regarding waiting for ICD-10, I would recommend that you start studying ICD-9 now. Also, Andrews is now offering an ICD-10 Transition course for students. Good luck!

Two-year Coding Programs
Oct 06, 2013

There was a post elsewhere about a coding program requiring 2 years.  If you are considering coding, please be aware that a 2-year program would be very unusual.  I have not seen one, other than possibly some for-profit diploma-mill "billing coding degree" affairs, which I don't think anyone here would recommend.   Please be careful that you understand what the requirements and legitimate options are.     ...

Okay Real Medical Infant Gestational Age
Mar 21, 2015

Dictator states infant born at 33-6/7 weeks, corrected gestational age now 37-7/7 weeks. Am I missing something? Wouldn't that be 38-0/7 weeks? Or maybe they have to have lived entirely through the last day to be rolled over to 38-0/7 weeks? Just not sure if I should flag this or there is some way of counting the actual last day of the week so that it is 7/7 (like the 7th day of the week), until the next day?   ...

Medical Coding Help!!
May 14, 2014

Hi I am currently enrolled in coding and scheduled for my CPC exam next month. I am so confused with all of it!! I really don't understand what you are supposed to code exactly from a note? Do you code everything, pmh, social history, procedures, impression, diagnoses? This is the hardest part for me, is knowing exactly what I am supposed to code. I had thought that it was just mainly the procedures and the disagnoses or impression, but sometimes it seems to be things listed in the whole r ...

Medical Coding Outside The US
Sep 17, 2014

Hello! I am hoping someone can help me! I am currently a remote coder for a hospital in NC. I am going to be moving to Costa Rica next year and am trying to find a contract company that will allow me to work outside the US. When I started my search I didn't think it would be hard, I figured with remote positons becoming so popular it wouldn't matter what country I was working in as long as I can connect to the internet. Unfortunately, I've called and emailed many companies and the ...

I have been researching schools & certifications for coding and getting a bit overwhelmed! I have pretty much decided on an online course but now to decide which one? From reading the forums i hear Andrews college is pretty good but this will cost $3800 and take about a yr. Another option i have is thru Ivy Tech which will be covered by FAFSA grant. I also checked into the classes directly thru AAPC. Is anyone familiar with any of these online classes that could give me some input? I am lean ...

Medical Coding Is So Difficult?
Mar 15, 2014

Where I work, I do prior auths for various tests and procedures that the physicians order. We are in EPIC and in the patient's chart, all the diagnoses have the codes listed right after them and any new diagnoses listed on the orders also include the code. So when I go to start the prior auth, the only codes I have to look up are the CPT codes for the test, which are referenced rather easily in the CPT coding book. Just the other day I had to get pre-determination for testing on a pat ...

Medical Coding - Risk For Offshoring
Feb 21, 2011

I am speaking with a counselor at a community college about a medical insurance coding certificate. Is the job marketing pretty stable for outpatient coders, who are not worki ...
