CCS vs. CPC - to clear this up - sm - Susan

I get tired of reading that hospitals only want CCS credentials. That completely depends on the hospital. What should be said is INPATIENT coding is CCS and OUTPATIENT is CPC.

A local government hospital here only wants CPC. A huge, huge, well-known hospital in my area takes both CPC and CCS because they do so much of BOTH.

Someone coming here for information on becoming a coder should find out where they want to work and what type of coding credential that requires.

I get tired of CCS and CPC people fighting over who thinks they are the best. If you can get a job with either, you are BOTH the best.

All but one of the people I have talked with at school that have passed both tests told me to start with the CPC. That give you confidence to take the CCS. It's best to take and pass both tests before you get your first job if you can, because you'll have more job options. Of course if you get offered a job before you get your credentials, I wouldn't turn that down either. I've noticed that many schools just teach toward the CPC, and even though that limits your job options, it also makes the course shorter and easier.

I'm wondering what will happen to those who only have the CPC when ICD-10-CM goes into effect. That's another reason to get both as soon as possible so you'll be prepared for what's coming in 2013. Hope that helps someone.

Nobody here is fighting about this. There IS a lot of dissention on the outside but not here.

They ARE both the best. That is why you need both. For a new coder it may beimpossible to predict the job market. Telling them to decide where they want to work and learn accordingly is will frustrate them because it will be impossible for them to know the future.

The fact is that some employers may respect one credentialing organization but not the other. He only way to deal with that is to get a credential from each.

If the government hospital is federal it will e unable to discriminate between credentials. If the job announcement says CPC it is only by chance that it does not list all the rest. They will consider all of them. The hospital that wants a CCS needs a CCS. The CCS is so specifically focused on inpatient coding that they are probably sure that it is necessary.

I have both because I want to be employable in any situation. Both have helped me succeed.

I wondered where that comment came from, because we don't fight about which one is better on here. I think we all pretty much agree that it's best to have both but you at least need one!

To anyone even thinking of signing with Amphion - steer clear !! This company totally sucks. Most all accounts are now VR and the platforms being used, and there are several, SUCK. Clear Choice Transcription is clearly a joke. The only reputable person at the company is the recruiter. Once you're handed off to the trainer you're screwed. Training there could be taught by a 1st grader. They rush through training and expect you to catch on in 15 minutes. Most of my questions, even after hired were answered by the recruiter.
