transcribing active files "testing" ??? - tiredofthetestingBS

Posted: Aug 31, 2014

Got offer to "test" with 3 companies lately from jobs posted on this site. Transcribed 5 fairly long reports each time. One answered that I did a "great job," but job has been placed "on hold" until a later time...that was 2-3 months ago. Listing was company, "CH." They had another post lately, last week I think, different field/area of practice though, from the ones I typed. Wasted about 1 1/2 hours, including multiple choice, foot pedal didn't work so did reports by hand. Second time, company 2, did the 5 reports, no answer from company at all. Testing including multiple choice, took about 2 hours. Third time, a few days ago, company posted listing on this site. Five reports to transcribe; this time, full patient's names given, hospitals, doctor's names, offices, addresses, and dates, which were current dates, such as job posted on Aug. 25, dates of reports Aug. 23 and 24th, etc. I'm sure I scored in the 99th percentile..now, if 100 people typed 5 current reports each under the pretext of "testing," um...is anybody concerned about this?

Sometimes companies get back-logged, and they do "testing" just to get the reports done. I'm almost positive this happened to me one time. I had no way to prove it, but once I did the 5 reports, I was unable to reach the company for any feedback regarding whether I got the job or not.

"testing" - OP

If this is happening, it is beyond outrageous. I have several reports I typed "saved," as I was instructed to do them in Word, and I did. One of these companies didn't bother to 'blank out' names, dates, doctors' names, addresses, etc., and other pertinent patient info. It also occurs to me, in addition to that which you mention about being "back-logged" and then coming on here to "test"-- that companies may take our work and then propose 'their services,' actually using the work we've done...to pitch to hospitals and/or clinics, etc., therefore there is no job, currently...! (Could happen)! I'm now thinking, if it could happen, it's probably happening...

Do you think they are familiar - with the American phrase

If you think -- even suspect -- that the reports contain personally identifiable information, report it. It is easy to do. The link is below.

The fines are enormous ... large enough to wipe out some companies.

Educate yourself as to what constitutes PII. It is not just names and addresses, but anything within the text that can be used alone or in conjunction with other information to identify the patient.

The first two could be legitimate tests, using existing reports they believe are typical and/or challenging enough to test your abilities. My company routinely uses this method as one test for job applicants (usually maximum 3 short reports). The third one, if those are the true demographics, is clearly in breach of HIPAA regulations and actionable. Maybe they creatively made up the identifying information (?) I do not see anything amiss with the length of time required to complete their tests. I like this post from MT Stars titled "Protect Yourself, Research the Job, 2010-01-19.

After my original post about testing... - replies received

Interestingly, after my original post, I received two replies from the companies aforementioned, with whom I'd tested. One said that they appreciated my efforts, that I was an obvious, very strong candidate, but they were no longer in need of transcriptionists for the position--by the way, these were Radiology, and we all know there's not much left, not for "us" anyway...the other said basically the same thing, and apologized for the delay. Who knows if there was ever a job or not, versus the "idea" of a job or whatever the hell the companies were really up to... gotta laugh. What else? Kill yourself?!

I feel your pain. I have worked on all kinds of accounts but my small, female-run and female-employed company specializes in radiology. In the past five years each of our biggest clients moved to VR, much of it producing laughably poor quality reports. In keeping with the philosophy of VR sales, they were encouraged not to hire editors or if they did, to phase them out - so they get what they are paying for and we are all looking for jobs.

I just decided to now call myself "rad reject." Why not?

Thanks for your reply. Yes, so many of us are in the same boat, yet feel so isolated, at the same time...

Sorry about the loss of your accts. It's a disaster. I think of going "door-to-door" to small imaging places, in search of... but I never do. I feel like they'll look at me like I have 4 noses and send me a'packin'. I don't know what anyone's doing for radiology transcription services, as far as small imaging places, let's say...no idea how to go about trying to get business from a facility like that let alone a hospital. On my own I can do about a hundred reports per day, like anyone else with experience...I think of going to small facilities that might do approximately that amount with a cover letter and business card, but just feel it's not feasible. Are you trying anything like that at this point?

Testing Voice Files With Patient Information?

Transcribing With VR
Feb 29, 2012

This might be considered controversial, but has any MT out there used a VR program to "transcribe" dictation instead of actually using a keyboard to transcribe?  So I am not misunderstood, I'll be very literal here:  As the MT, you listen to the dictation and instead of typing it out, you speak what you are hearing into a VR program on your computer to produce the "transcribed" report.  I can't be the only one out here who has thought of this and the only reason I can co ...

Transcribing

I'm sorry, I need to blow off some steam and perhaps those who have their own accounts could shed some light.  I have been an MT for a very long time and in the past, what an MT did was TRANSCRIBE.  We didn't follow account specs or change sentences, etc.  Why has the MT industry come to this and why do the MTSO owners agree to this?  I don't mind at all fixing broken English, because I understand that process, but changing what a doctor says, because it's ...

Transcribing An Interview
Jul 14, 2010

I am doing some side work transcribing a research interview, and was wondering your opinions.  One of the respondents in the interview panel is ESL.  Her grammar is very often incorrect.  I asked them when I got the project if they wanted the transcription verbatim, and she said "yes, let's leave it true to form."  I had asked because the previous work had a lot of "like" and "you know" in it, and transcribing every utterance was actually really hard.  ...

Pay For Editing Vs. Transcribing
Jan 27, 2012

Hey guys I was just mulling over the fact that editing accrues 1/2 that of transcribing, yet it tends to be as difficult if not moreso depending on the butchering job it does to the dictation (heavens forbid they have a thick accent. then it truly only stands in the way of progress...)... both I & my mother are MTs & just kind of wondering- does anyone else think this is fair? Is there literally anything fair about this? I mean, even the base rates for transcribing aren't mucho buen ...
