No longer commercially available - hmmm

You may try posting on the classifieds board to see if someone will sell you theirs. It isn't operational for most people on Vista or Win 7.

Definitely available commercially - shipwrected

It's available through Amazon.com. Read the description to make sure it works with your platform. I'd kill to be able to use it again but it won't work with DocQScribe.

my definition of commercially available is - hmmm

[ In Reply To ..]
the product being actively produced with support offered by the company selling it. Yes, used copies and perhaps some repackaged or even new copies are available on Amazon. But if you are looking for a product being actively produced, sold and supported by the company - in this case, Stedman's - this is not one of those products.

it does not work with any 'platform' - it works wiith Word. - platform needs to be word-based. NM

SmartType - mar0622

You can still use SmartType..in a round about way. What I ended up doing was buying Instant Text. You can import SmartType into that and use it that way. That probably doesn't help you though, sorry.

expanders - anon

If you are looking for an expander I think the best one would be FastFox. It is the very simple to use and never gave me any trouble.

expanders - sf

Is FastFox a medical expander? Smart Type was deleted from my computer. But, I was able to set up the Smart Type with Windows XP which is a requirement. It has medical expander, dictionary and drug reference. Very useful for transcription.

Thank you for all the reply.

Typing Speed Of MT's
Feb 17, 2011

No one seems to talk about typing speed these days.  I see a huge difference in earning ability of an MT by their typing speed.  I get resumes and people don't even put their typing speed on a resume often.  I have to go back and ask them.  It is the best ruler out there.  Are there any 100 wpm typists out there looking for clinic work, M-F, 9-5?  Since we all work by production, obviously the faster you type, the more you will earn (and happier you will be) bu ...

Typing Speed Test - Sm
Mar 17, 2012

I need some help/opinions.  I think I transcribe fairly fast, i.e., lines per hour.  I have been looking to get out of MT and into something related and have been given a typing test (in person) on a couple of occasions.  The problem is that I stink at typing from written copy as opposed to from hearing it via dictation.  My brain just isn't wired to pass these tests :( ...

Smart Type
Oct 28, 2014

I downloaded the trial version of Smart Type and have been trying to use it for the last two days.  I think it might work for me but I have a lot of word expanders in Word 2010 that would take me forever to duplicate in Smart Type.  Is there any easier way?  And how long does it normally take to become proficient in using this program.  Right now it is slowing me WAY down!   Thanks for any help you can give me. ...

My Typing Speed Is Puny Compared To All Of You.
Feb 17, 2011

I feel so inadequate as a typist after reading all of your posts.  I can't type anywhere nearly as fast as you guys.  Quality does mean a lot to me, plus at times I'm dyslexic and my fingers have a mind of their own.   I may find that quality will go out the window, though, if I get a job being paid by the lines (currently I'm paid by the hour inhouse) as I'm attempting to do. ...

Stedman's Smart Type
May 20, 2011

wondering about how stable stedman's smarttype is for everyone else.  I have used the program for years, but noticed recently odd things happening.  Has anyone else had unexpected things happen with smartype and word 2007.  What could I replace it with that would be its equal?  Call the programmers consortium who made the program originally, but no one knows anything.  Could use some light shed on the subject.   ...

Typing Speed Cut In Half With Poor Dictators? Try This...
May 29, 2015

It can be shocking to see what your actual typing speed averages with poor dictators, pauses in dictation, having to research, etc. Take your total lines per shift. Divide by number of hours you work. Times  11 (I believe average words per line) Divided by 60 (minutes)  Equals your words per minute.  So if you do what many MTSOs require,  250 lines transcription per hour, your average typing speed to achieve that is 45.8 WPM.  If your typing ...

I am planning to purchase Speed Type within the next couple of days and would appreciate hearing from others who use it. Speed Type Program
Sep 28, 2013

I am having problems with my Speed Type program not keeping up with me. I do not understand the pause feature and cannot understand what to do to give it time to catch up. It almost works perfectly if I do not continue typing after an abbreviation is typed, but that makes me pause too much. If I put a period or space in, sometimes it just does not type anything but the first character of the abbreviation and at times the abbreviation cue I give it also remains attached. Such as, tp for the patie ...

Not To Smart With Computers
Jan 08, 2011

Hi all, I purchased a new computer over Christmas with a very large screen due to having poor eyesight.  Everything seems fine until I get into ChartScript, where everything is so very, very small.  It is worse than with my smaller screen.  I have to literally stand up and put my nose to the screen to make sure I have correct patient info in the demographics, etc.  Any suggestions?  Is there something on the screen itself I can adjust, or do you think it is within ChartS ...

Smart People
Jan 29, 2012

Back in the mid and late 80s, I was VERY proud to be an MT!   MTs were savvy and SMART.  In fact, they were SO smart -- or at least knowledgable and proficient -- that docs RELIED ON THEM to repair poorly dictated or hastily dictated transcription. My friend/former boss is a rheumatologist who constantly used to say, "I KNOW you're a deep thinker, so WHY are you a medical transcriptionist?"  Until recently, I didn't really understand why he aske ...

Low Work, UE, TSM Is Not Smart
Apr 04, 2013

So far this week I have had 2 hours on Monday, 0 on Tuesday, 0 Wednesday and 30 minutes today. Last week I only got 8 hours. Emailed TSM about changing books of business and she said no one is looking for first shift, although I doubt she even asked since she emailed me back almost immediately (which never ever happens). Also, there are some MTs on here who say they have plenty of work, so why won't she send me there? Asked me to switched to late 2nd shift. However, there is still ...

Smartype Smart Blocks & EXText
Jan 04, 2010

I work in Dictaphone /EXText.   I am dependent on my Stedman's Smartype for 100s of 1000s of terms with which I am not familiar, and to which I have total access while in EXText.  However, I am not able to pull Smartype Smart Blocks (which I have created while in Word but not in EXText) into a current document.  In the past, I got around this problem at work by creating "instant macros," going into ctrl-s, cutting, pasting into current document and using as a g ...

ASR Speed
Apr 10, 2012

I've been transcribing for 23 years. I recently got switched to pretty much all ASR and I really like it. However, the pay is only 4 cents per line plus my shift differential, so that's 4.75 cents per line. I started ASR three days ago. I find it totally non-stressful, pleasant, and interesting. But I am averaging about $7.50 an hour! I don't necessarily need to get tons of money, but this isn't even minimum wage in California (which is $8.00 per hour). How can I get speed? I ...
