Update on Patient First Interview - Cee

Posted: Jan 08, 2015

I posted the other day that I had scheduled an interview with Patient First.  I had the interview yesterday and, as I've read on these boards, I have nothing bad to say about them!  I was a little taken aback when I heard I'd have to travel to Virginia for training, but for someone like me who has been working at home for 8+ years, it's a blessing!!  I'm looking forward to meeting everyone who will be at training at the end of this month!Laughing

Did you have to test twice? - see message

[ In Reply To ..]
Congratulations! I was wondering if you had to test twice? I took the test on-line and then someone came out to my house and I tested again. Or will you have to test again when you get there?

test twice - Cee

[ In Reply To ..]
I am supposed to test again when I get down there at the end of the month. Hopefully, being out of my "comfort zone" (home) won't affect my concentration!

welcome aboard. - current employee

They treat you well when you are there. They put me up in a hotel not far from the office, rented me a nice car and even told me to go check out the town. All meals are paid for. I was there 4 days and it didn't cost me a penny.

Will you be doing clinic notes side or radiology side?

We have 2 "sides." One is the current side that does strictly clinic notes then we have the "other side" that does the overdue clinic notes and radiology. Which side will you be working on?

All I can say is we need all the help we can get.

But what about travel TO Virginia? - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Do you mean they paid for a rental car from your home all the way to Virginia? Or just for getting around the city? It does sound like a great opportunity, but the travel expense of getting there from Illinois would be pretty high for me.

Travel to and from VA - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
They will either fly you there and back, or will give you a gas mileage for there and back. Awesome place to work.

I seem to remember from previous posts that - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Patient First only hires within the regions of their clinics, which I believe are all in the East, so I don't know if living in Illinois you would even have a chance at a job with them. Might want to check that out first.
They hire from all over the US - anon

I was in training with a lady from California, so that doesn't apply any longer.

two sides - Cee

I'm not sure yet what I'll be assigned to. They asked me about Radiology when I had my interview, and I was told that the Radiology is really just plain films, so it's not that hard to pick up.

I'm glad to hear a few more details about how they treat you in Virginia for training - that is completely awesome! From reading some of the other posts, the second test is kind of worrying me, so I hope I do well on it.

Just curious - Cee

[ In Reply To ..]
I was just wondering, since you are a current employee..during the training week, what is the general dress code? I'm figuring business casual, but my "business attire" for the last 8+ years has been jeans!

I took the second test and passed! I was offered a position this morning and will be heading to Virginia next week to fill out new hire paperwork and do some training. :)

I know you were worried and I am glad everything turned out. Keep an open mind cause we do things differently, and I will keep my fingers crossed for you that all goes well. Again congrats, I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

Did they tell you what side you will be working on, current dictation or back dictation/radiology?
Thank you! - Chele
[ In Reply To ..]
Thanks so much for your kind words! :) I'm really excited to get started! I was honestly surprised to get an offer, as the testing was pretty brutal! lol

I'm not sure which side I will be on yet, but I've currently been doing mostly radiology, and we discussed that during the interview. Either way, I was happy to be hired! :)
Radiology side. - current employee
[ In Reply To ..]
is much harder for sure. We don't just get 1-2 centers and their doctors we get them all and all the doctors, so that is why we get paid the higher rate. It's hard work but I am definitely getting decent checks considering our profession.

If you end up on the side I am on I will get the email and the first question I am going to ask you is if you were Chele on here. If you end up on the other side I won't know about it. But good luck and they treat you well while you are in Virginia.
Thanks! - Chele
[ In Reply To ..]
Thanks! They never really specified which side I would be working, but if I am put on radiology, I'll see you there! lol :)

How long does it take to do the first online test? - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I wondered if it is similar to other companies that test online. Thanks.

PF interview - PF employee

[ In Reply To ..]
Hi and welcome aboard (almost)! For those asking, yes you will take a test again. It used to be when you got to Va, but I guess they want to make sure you can do the work before flying you out there so have found ways to make it work regionally. There have been instances in the past where a person passed the test, but then couldn't do the work, so it was suspected they got help during the 1st test done at home.

It is an excellent job.

When you complete your stay in Va, you will go back home and train on our way of doing things. We type in a very unique manner that takes some getting used to. You will train for approx 6 weeks (on an hourly admin rate) before you begin production typing. It will feel like you will never get it, and you will wonder if you are doing the right thing and if you will ever be productive in our system, but I assure you 100% that you will get used to it and it will be second nature. When you finish up with training, you will be put on a primary center where you will type pretty much every day. You will get very used to your doctors, will be able to make tons of auto corrects, and will become extremely productive and can finish your lines in no time.

What we have said here is 100% true about the job and benefits. You are treated as a part of the team and they really value the job we do and see us an integral part of the patient care process. I have had several TLs now, and each is supportive and helpful, but let you get your job done. You really don't hear from them unless you need to.

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!

Do you know if they only hire locally within the region of their clinics or can anyone across the country apply? I hate to waste my time testing if they just hire locally.

Your are paid hourly for the 6 week or so you are in training, then it is per line. You also receive the hourly rate for PTO and other times when you use admin time.

In their job posting they mention radiology. Do they require radiology experience? I have 15 years of experience but have never done rad. Thank you for your response. Before I waste time or their applying I want to know I have what they require.
Passed first test but not second - :(
[ In Reply To ..]
About 6 months I passed the first test and had an interview. Someone came to my house to do the second test. I didn't pass the second test so I didn't get the job. I can assure you, I did not get help with the first test. Maybe I was nervous for the second test I don't know. I was so upset when I didn't get hired. They told me to test again in 6 months so I just reapplied.
we have two "sides."...... - current employee
[ In Reply To ..]
one does the dictations that are done after the date of visit and radiology (called back dictation) and the other side transcribes all the reports dictated on the date of visit (called current dictation).

Radiology and back dictation work right in the system. The current dictation works in Word 2010, one report after the other and then sends the file to be uploaded. Current dictation only does the clinic visit notes.

Pay is based on a 50 character line fo both sides.

Pay as follows:
Back dictation: 0.093 cents per line for clinic visit note and 0.12 cents per line for radiology reports. Back dictation transcriptionists work directly in the chart.

Current dictation: 0.079 cents per line, typing in Word.

I can't tell you enough how Patient First is one of the last "good" companies out there to work for. You are treated with respect and they truely care about you as a person. The company does a lot for their employees, but unfortunately with us being all over the country we are not able to participate in their activities, but we are truely a family. Best part is we are told "thank you for all your hard work, done a great job, glad to have you on the team," etc.

I believe we are scheduled to open 8 more centers this year and that will be a tremendous amount of work for us on top of the 55 centers already open. I have been there 4 years and not once have a run out of work.

The testing is very hard, and I don't know how I passed it, but I did and have considered myself lucky every day since then.
this sound like extremely generous like counts- - nm

I am sure with all this good PR they will be flooded with applications in hopes of getting hired and getting the great pay
For "two sides", pay is actually - PF PU
[ In Reply To ..]
only 0.79 c/l for 50-character line per interview with them. Pay not as high I would have liked, but no one pays for experience anymore anywhere it seems. Seems like a good company but don't like having to travel for training. People should be allowed to train at home with their own PC if they choose and they should only be provided with company equipment if they prove themselves during the training period. If they can't cut it during training, then cut them loose and the company loses nothing. Shouldn't have to jump through hoops and travel hundreds of miles to train just to earn 0.79 c/l in 2015. JMO
pay - work at PF
[ In Reply To ..]
I think 0.79 cpl is actually pretty good for a 50 character line.

You also need to factor in that we send no copies whatsoever, ever, so no need to worry about looking up all that extra doctor info.

The headers that you need to verify are 2 lines - patient number, patient name, and you get paid for them.

I have typed on most of the centers by this point, and I would say 95% of the doctors do not dictate the meds the patient is on, and if they do, about 99% do not put in the dosages and number of times per day taken, etc. About the same percent dictate/do not dictate labs unless there are pertinent findings, and then usually just that actual lab and its value, not the whole string of normal labs.

Mostly you type on your main center, which has a handful of doctors versus the hundreds I had in the acute care setting. The work is clinic/PCP work, so lots of redundancy and not tons of specialties, instruments, and meds to keep up with. You make auto corrects for your handful of doctors, so you can move fast. There is only 1 work type. You type your report on 1 long Word doc, so no uploading individual reports all day. We don't number anything or break out the exam, etc. You just keep typing in a paragraph.

With all these taken into consideration, you should have no problem typing around 300-350-400 lph. That works out to $23.70 to 31.60/hour.

It may not seem like so much per line, but the system is set up to make you as productive as possible, so it works out to much more pay per hour than most of the places you will find.
re: travel - work at PF
[ In Reply To ..]
The travel is more to meet everyone in person, attend your benefit meeting, have some hands on training so you can turn on your computer and pull up the programs you need to start formal training, and really just get to know the company a little better. They are sort of old fashioned in a lot of ways, and they like the personal interaction. Since we are remote, they like to try to make you feel your are part of the team and a real employee, not just a number.

You do train at home, but on their computer. All work is done on their dedicated system. It is just the way they like things.

This is a job that you can stay with for years if you choose. Decent pay, good benefits, all typing, M-F schedule, work the hours you want, employee gifts, xmas bonus, triple pay for holidays. If this isn't worth a few days of your time, to stay with a good job, without having to look around again because your work has suddenly dried up and you can't make any money, etc., then it might not be a good fit since that is the requirement. Not trying to come off in any way short with you or that I even disagree with what you said, its just most of us did not find it to be too much of an imposition considering what we got in return - a job for the long term that is not getting outsourced to N!

consider this company. Even with having to travel to VA for a few days, I believe at their expense it seems like a good deal. It hard to get pay like they offer, the numbers were like 23-31 bucks an hour, who the freak is making that kind of money with other companies, I certainly am not. I barely get by. I am considered a very frugal person and if I wasn't I would be under a bridge living in a box. I would advise anyone who is in this for the long run to keep an eye on PF and consider them. I wish I had known more about this company years ago. Good luck to everyone.

How long did it take them to contact you for an interview? I got an email from someone from HR saying they will contact me if they are interested in an interview. Did you get that too?

How long to hear - Cee

[ In Reply To ..]
I actually applied to them back during the summer, at a time when I was unemployed. I heard from them by email first about a month later, but I had just taken another position at that time. They told me at that time that, if the current position did not work out, to get in touch. Well, I heard from them about once a month since then, and I figured "why not at least try?" So, I emailed them back and a telephone interview was arranged about 2 days from that point.

Pay is pretty good, too. Had to do a little negotiating there, and they offered a little higher than they usually pay in this positio ...

Hi everyone I just wanted to stop by really quick and let you all know that finally, FINALLY I am off QA. I was given two accounts today in addition to the one they had initially given me. Still, four days on a very restrictive QA protocol was quite scary. I am a LOT grayer now ...

Just a quick line to let you all know that there are better things out there for you.  I am now 79 days away from graduating with my MD.  The only blocks I have left are orthopedics and pain management.  I have worked my way through medical school, which of course means I did not have much time to study.  None the less, I am in the top 10% of my class, and I attribute it to the information I learned transcribing.  Even if you feel you do not have the 4+ years to put ...
