Testing with "Live Reports" - questioning MT

Not sure if this should be posted here or on Main Board. I sent a resume to an MT company. They wrote me back to ask me when I'm available to test on 3 "live" reports." What exactly does this mean - that the reports are current and never transcribed? Anyone know? I'm hesitant to do this, but maybe it is standard procedure? Thanks for the feedback.

It sounds like they are using applicants to get their backlog cleared up without paying for it. They usually don't tell you that's what they're doing, though. You might want to inquire a little more closely before doing the work. If they are using applicants to get their backlog done for free, you will likely not hear back from them or will be told that you didn't pass or the job is filled or something similar.

I wrote to them and asked if it was never transcribed before, and she said yes, and that I would download their software/Emdat and be given a password. I wrote back that due to HIPAA issue and other concerns, I didn't know if it was wise or appropriate for me to transcribe live reports (regardless that the reports would go through QA) for a company I am not contracted with. She just wrote back and said they don't have canned reports, that's all they have, and if I'm uncomfortable, they can call off testing process.

I last wrote and asked her frankly if she can assure me this is not a HIPAA issue... Think I'm gonna pass.

Got very strong assurance that they do follow HIPAA and only owner/partner would QA. But, she wrote that since I'm clearly uncomfortable, will not proceed with testing. Actually does sound quite legit, wrote that they have been testing this way for more than a decade. Oh well.

The question to ask her is that will she indemnify you for any errors on your part while you do these "live reports." That should stop her in her tracks. I think you were very wise not to proceed, and I hope you find a great job soon.

I would demand to know EXACTLY how they define "live reports" before I did anything else. It sounds to me like they are using applicants to clear out their old reports. That actually happened to me once when I applied for an MT job many moons ago. Although I was offered the job, I said "Not only no, but h*ll no."

I forgot to share that the owner said they have E&O insurance (errors and omissions)... so I guess that would be the indemnify part, and they do have it covered. I don't quite understand why they can't save previously dictated reports and bleep out personal info in the report to do testing on - but I don't know the in's and out's of doing that, really. I asked her for assurance, and she really did give it to me - that they have E&O, that they have done it this way for 14 years without issue, and that only she or partner (owners of company) would review the reports. I know some of you did get duped into helping out with a company's backlog... but I really think this person/company was legit. I probably could have pressed it and assured her that I was comfortable since she gave assurances. But, I still wasn't 100% comfortable, so moving on! Thanks for the feedback.

I have a chance to get in with an MT company that also offers their ICs a chance at live note taking. It doesn't pay too good, though, less than what the standard reports pay per audio minute. I have been turned down by 3 different MT companies stating it is because of California's laws creating problems. Anyone else having this problem? Is there a way around it? MModal made me install Windows Live, but I need to uninstall it. Long story, but it was a disaster. Can someone tell me how to do a send/receive in Windows Live Mail? I know with my Outlook Express, I can manually do one, either on the tool bar or with keystrokes. Ctrl + N will open a new message box, and ctrl + m will do a manual "send/receive." I can do the new message thing in Live Mail, but I can't do the send/receive. Can someone help me? It doesn't have to be keystrokes, but I can't find it on the tool/menu bar. ...
