Per diem or prn work?

Has anyone worked transcription Per Diem? I am looking in California and finding this to be a very common trend. There are several in-house positions, all Per Diem. I have an interview this week and from what the recruiter told me it is like part-time but you are not guaranteed hours, however, I would rather try something new than work 40 hours a week for minimum wage. I've been in this business for 30 years, but am under employed at the moment and am starting to get bored to tears with having so little work to do.
