Orthopaedic Transcription - Wondering
Posted: Sep 13, 2014
How difficult would orthopaedic transcription be for someone who has never done it, but has been an MT for over 25 years?

I don't specialize in ortho but get a lot of ortho surgery/consults to do. It's not bad at all. You learn the bone, tendon, ligament names & the names of ortho surgical supply companies & tools, no big deal. Some of these doctors prefer to use particular companies, so you can get used to things pretty quick when you hear same thing often. The surgery reports can go fast since a lot of the procedures are routine.
Easy. You won't have a problem - sm - Anon

with 25 years of experience. Orthopedics is similar to radiology, both of which are easy.

Thanks so much to both of you for your replies! I have an opportunity to actually work for a large orthopaedic sports medicine center instead of continuing to struggle at home with all these crazy MTSOs, with great benefits as well! I'm thrilled, but scared since I have never worked in this specialty, so your replies are reassuring. These days an opportunity like this doesn't come along very often, so I'm very grateful and super excited, but was a little worried!
Congrats! - Anon

I think you'll do well at it. Ortho is good. It won't take you very long to get comfortable with it. I'm glad you're looking forward to it. That actually helps bring back my own enthusiasm for the reports I do.

Thanks for your reply "no biggie." I wonder if any of you could tell me what I might do to learn some of the terminology and do a little studying before I start? Any recommended reading, etc? Thanks so much!
Here's one little tip - HTH

Do a Google search for anatomy images and save them to your hard drive in a specific folder. You could peruse them occasionally and begin to familiarize yourself with some of the terminology.

Thank you HTH ~ Excellent idea! I also pulled up a glossary of orthopedic terms including surgical procedures and terms that I am going over. I'm surprised that I'm already familiar with a lot of them!
Everyone has been so helpful and encouraging! Thank you so much for that!
book - no biggie

I have a copy of "World's Best Anatomical Chart Series" that helps me a lot with most body systems. I got it online. I needed something I could look at, not just always search online. It's a book set up like flip-chart & stands up on desk. It's not new, but the names of parts haven't changed, so it's not going to become outdated. I've used it for both work and personal research.

I see it both ways and don't use it much myself but it always makes me wonder which is "proper" and why?
Or is it just a matter of preference?

Hello Ortho Experts! I'm typing for plastic surgeon who says: "Pathology returns as s/l osteo-mi-cutis"? I've tried different spellings, no luck. Educate me, please. Thanks so much. ...
I just started with an orthopaedic group. I am having a heck of a time finding this test. He says "Negative (open can). Negative drop-arm test." I know there is such a thing as Empty can test but it sounds nothing like "empty can". Sounds like "open can". Is there such a thing?
Also, is it post injection, post-injection or postinjection. I see it written all 3 ways online from medical manuals, etc.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I would appreciate any input anyone may have on these 3 companies. I have tried to find out about them through their local BBB, but only Net Med Transcription has anything on it. Thanks. ...

A legal contact was inquiring about the connection of medical mistakes related to off-shored transcription mistakes. I have told him to review these boards and hopefully he will benefit from the information here.
While he did not discuss the exact case, I think that he will be able to use the off-shore transcription issue to his client's benefit or at least highlight that the provider in question does not have as rigorous control on processing records as other pr ...
I have been offered a position with both. I have; however, in the past, had a position where the employer still owes me $6000. Does United pay and have the work? Does Nuance have enough work for me? I need full time work guaranteed income, like everyone else. Good luck to all out there! ...
Would someone explain to me how is that this company can legally pay us a lower rate for ASR compared to transcription? After they pushed ASR on me, (said that I wouldn't ever get a 50:50 ratio of ASR to transcription) I am getting mostly ASR work. My pay has dropped significantly. Can they do this? ...

Since the advent of voice recognition and overseas outsourcing, transcription has ceased to be a profession. I will NEVER -- repeat, NEVER make the money I was making as a transcriptionist at a hospital 5 years ago, before we were replaced by VR and cheap outsourcing to India. Now all that's left are transcription companies here in the U.S. that don't want to pay much more, lie to us and tamper with our line counts. GET OUT, GET OUT OF TRANSCRIPTION! ...
It seems that everyone has negative things to say about how employers do not pay MTs what they're worth and how they offshore the easy stuff, but pile on the lousy ESL stuff on the transcriptionists in the States. Too bad there can't be a general strike of U.S. MTs - a day without transcription - just to show how we're needed. It seems to be the only thing employers would understand.
Impossible, I know, but I bet employers would sit up and take notice. ...
I would love to do medical transcription at home but I don't have very strong ESL experience. I live in Arkansas, for pete's sake! Is there not a transcription company out there that starts you out with dictators you can actually understand until you get used to everything????? ...
I failed at an archive search, but for some reason I'm associating this MTSO as being sort of like Toth, with a Christian-based philosophy or something?
