Im getting suspicious of my company's line-count - function on their software. (SM)

Is there a way to count lines I've typed somewhere in MS Word? I want to be able to count lines (or keystrokes, perhaps?) with my own PC's software, not THEIRS, to see if I'm getting cheated. Any ideas?

you could copy and paste your report into your own MS word document and count from there. Go up to tools and word count. You can count the whole report characters with spaces. Count the characters and then divide by 65. That will give you your line count. Don't go by the Word line count because that is based on a "gross line" and wouldn't be correct for sure.

you have to add the paragraphs x2 then divide by 65 for correct count - counter

It is correct to say that going by word count in MS Word is based on a gross line. That is how we used to count and that was fair. Counting by characters divided by 65 is what is not fair. It is a matter of opinion whether it is correct or not.

You are wrong, a gross line is more money for us, but really is not fair. a 65 character line means a line is a line. A gross line you could have two words or ten words nad it still would be a line. Yes, better money for us, but fair no.

I am talking about fair as in "equal" to all MTs. Yes I would like to get paid by the gross line, who wouldn't? I have in the past as have many others. But I should say "equal." When you pay or are paid on a 65 character line, everyone is being paid the same. A line is a line when you pay on the character line.

That being said, if I could find a company that paid on a gross line, you bet I would work for them.

Yes that's the correct way to go about,count the total number of characters and divide by 65,it will automatically give you the line count.

In Word, top toolbar, click on Tools then Word Count. It will give you number of pages, words, characters (with and without spaces), paragraphs, and lines. This is fine if you want to count one document at a time.

I use a program from Sylcount. You can get a free trial from their website, I think it is something like 100 uses, then you have to purchase the software. I use this as I have to count multiple documents at a time for invoicing, plus it adds up and invoices it for me based on the settings I input, and creates an actual invoice that I use to bill.

Try the one in Word, but get the free Sylcount trial too... just to see how it works. Many companies use Sylcount as their line counter.

I worked for a company that used an MS word based program. They told me to add words + characters (without spaces) and divide by 65. I did this to keep up with my line count. In each biweekly pay period my check was about $20 more than my calculation using that method.

Is anyone else suspicious about how they are calculating our line counts? I have been siltting here VERY diligently and typing like crazy these last few days and my counts seem to be going DOWN!!! I can't imagine how this can be happening. Anyone else notice the same? Is there some way to keep track? I was just hired on with a company to do strictly VR. I am only going to be working part time so about 4 hours a day. I am wondering from those who do VR what kind of line production should I shoot for in 4 hours of work? What is the normal VR line count for part time? I have read that most who are working full time or 8 hours a day are doing more than 1,000, even 2,000 a day. Is this correct? I type 70,000 characters a day. I am paid by the 65 character line so I would divide 70,000 by 65 to get 1076, then multiple that by pay per line, say $.10 and get $107. If this is not correct then what is the formula? And what is the average number of lines per day? Thanks so much for the info. ...

I was wondering if anyone could tell me what is the easiest way to not count template lines when trying to invoice? I get a line count through Word, but I hear that Word counts blank spaces as well. I have been working for this company for about 18 month and so far so good. It was even bought out by a bigger company and everything stayed the same with no problems. They don't bother me, I do my work and everything is fine. I have been told that I need to increase my LPH. So last night I kept track of the lines of each document done by using MS Word. But later when I compared it to Nuance's line tracker (ichart) it only listed half the lines that MS Word listed. How can this be? So far, I have calculated the "count score" on Fluency at the new rate of 0.08/.048 vs per report rate. I 'lost' on average $165-175 per pay period over the past 3 months by the line count. My report rates are currently 1.20/.072. Anyone else? Please share. Also, the 'count score' is our line count, right?? ...

I used to do 250-275 lph fairly easily. Lately, I am typing as fast and furious as ever and struggle to get above 200 lph. Not sure what is going on, but I'm pretty sure it ain't me. Is it typical to only receive a percentage of your edited lines because "editing is faster and better" than straight transcription? I am new to VR, but this seems odd to me. What in the heck does .05 for every 43 black characters equal out to. It doesn't sound good but I'm no math whiz. Maybe, I'm missing something and who pays like that.
