Does anyone actually even double their line count doing SR work? - ke
Posted: Aug 23, 2012
I am new to SR and not doing any better line count wise then I do straight typing? Am I doing something wrong...I heard that your line count should double....help!!!
No, not in 20 years. Pure rip-off - someone has to pay for HR

I am leaving MT for good but this is what I know. It can still be a good job to promote you elsewhere. It is not a good job in and of itself. You will never make the kind of money I used to make in the 80s and 90s and early 2000s. This is a low-wage job. It is. Accept it or get out. I am taking my skill set and moving on.
Nope, not here either. sm - not liking SR

I type fast (about 85-100 wpm) and read fast and the closest I've come on a day when I stayed 100% focused and did nothing else and had OP notes (which seem to lend themselves better to SR because there's no formatting involved) was 1-3/4 times straight typing line rate. On average, I do somewhere between 1-1/4 times straight typing rate and just under 1-1/2 times. I've never been able to actually double it. I get a mix of SR reports (histories, consults, summaries, OP notes). The only way that I see anyone doubling their count is they type slow but can read fast and have a good engine to work with.

I have been with my company for about 3 months, my first round with SR. I hated it at first, but we have a good trainer and a decent platform (I suppose anyway, nothing to compare it to.) But I have finally gotten where I can do a little over double what I would normally type in an hour. I do; however, work on one clinic and do the same 3 or 4 doctors everyday and there are no ESL. I'm sure that helps tremendously. I'm learning to like it a lot, and hesistant to say, but almost more than straight typing. It's a nice change.
absolutely possible IF you get good docs and good SR - anon

On clinic notes, as the above poster stated, it should not be a problem to double your production. I can get up to 4x production with good VR, clear dictators.
Now, the reality and the problem with this is that many MTSOs offshore most/all of the clear dictators. The original promises we received when VR started have all been broken. We were told that around 15% to 20% of the dictators would NEVER be appropriate for SR and they would continue to be straight transcription. We had methods in place for reporting these and they promised they would audit all VR, and if too high of a percent of corrections were consistently made, that dictator would be removed.
Well, we all know how well these promises were kept. I have about 95% to 97% SR, every dictator under the sun, and I just erase the garbage and straight type many of them. So while I can occasionally get 3x and 4x production, that is the exception as most of these good reports are in India, and my REAL average is more like 1.5 x production. The MTSOs know and they do not care, there are no longer any methods for petitioning to get certain dictators removed, that has long ago been discontinued.
And you, my friend, are the exception that proves the rule - 99.9% of MTs cannot double production with SR. nm
That is how I feel, too. Some hours my production is 2 to 3 times traditional...sm - ndmt68

and some hours it is the same as traditional. It depends on so many factors with biggest factor being your account. If you could get a realistic blend of authors on your account, I think you could double it; however, there are authors out there who produce the most ridiculous nonsense that it can't possibly be edited - it has to be retyped. I do what you do - I make normals for SR nightmares and use them. I don't fuss with trying to edit garbage.
Yeah. 1 acct w/ 3-4 nonESL docs, is not the normal. You are also - the exception to the rule. Lucky you. nm
It also depends on how fast you are with straight typing... - MT

For those who are averaging double, I'd be interested in how many lph that is and what platform.
For example, I average about 250-300 straight. On my last account (headers and footers were included, great VR platform - ExText - patient info imported, no nitpicky QA) I could average 400-500 VR.
On my present account, my VR average is closer to 350 (platform more cumbersome - M*Modal-based - with time-consuming ADT, etc.). I would have to average 500-600 to make double my straight, which is impossible with this new company.
So, unfortunately, the way it is set up now, the better you were at your job, the bigger pay-cut you take with VR.
Yeah, whatever. But the Majority cannot do double. - nm

So saying that I average 250-300 straight, but now only averaging 350 VR and getting paid much less is saying how great I am??
I was answering the OP's question. It's relative - someone who types 150 straight will like doing VR at 300 and can say, yes, they are doubling their lines. Someone typing 300 straight will HATE VR at 300 lph. Get the point I'm making? Sheesh.
Nope - me

I averaged 200 lines/hour with straight transcription and do an average of 300 lines/hour with VR. I don't see myself ever going much higher because I've done everything I can to be as efficient as possible.
Straight typing I do 350-400 lph .. no way have I ever come close to 700-800 with VR. sm - COMT

Just hooey they feed you to try to justify cutting your wages in half, plus most of the VR programs I have worked with are not that great and so I end up typing most of the document myself for half the wages. grrr
Not only did mine NOT double, it actually went - DOWN, to less than straight typing.

VR productivity is an empty promise.
And a myth.
I'm sorry...but, what is "SR?" - MT2

I'm trying so hard to find positive chat in here..but I don't know what "SR" is. Can someone please tell me? Thanks!
SR = Speech recognition. VR = Voice recognition - they are the same thing.
I used to have no problems getting 200+, now have all I can do to get 150 and have been written up for same. I do not see any change on the policy. Anyone else? ...
I usually use the line count built into the Word program itself. Is MTStars flash count and/or abacus equivocal ?? Any one program better than the other ?? TIA ...
I was just hired on with a company to do strictly VR. I am only going to be working part time so about 4 hours a day. I am wondering from those who do VR what kind of line production should I shoot for in 4 hours of work? What is the normal VR line count for part time? I have read that most who are working full time or 8 hours a day are doing more than 1,000, even 2,000 a day. The company I will be working for wants a minimum of 10,000 lines in a payperiod which the lady said even with part time ...
Anyone have MP Count? I used it a few years ago, but my computer crashed so I no longer have it. I'm not sure if this IC job is gonna work out so I'm not wanting to buy a program at this point. Any advice?
Thanks. ...
Is this correct? I type 70,000 characters a day. I am paid by the 65 character line so I would divide 70,000 by 65 to get 1076, then multiple that by pay per line, say $.10 and get $107. If this is not correct then what is the formula? And what is the average number of lines per day? Thanks so much for the info. ...
I was wondering if anyone could tell me what is the easiest way to not count template lines when trying to invoice? I get a line count through Word, but I hear that Word counts blank spaces as well. I downloaded and use Flash Count, but it includes all 65 character lines, I beleive including the template headings. I hope this makes sense. Please help!! ...
I would like opinions about the IT (Instant Text) line count program? Do you find it user friendly? Are there other programs preferred/easier? Any suggestions or opinions? TIA. ...
Just did a job with a big standard. I have the line count, but do not know how to tell if I'm being credited with the lines in the standard. How can I calculate this? Thanks. ...
Hi. Can anyone decipher what the memo means about the new line count? How will our pay change, wait...never mind...I am sure it will go down. Anyway, what does this new stuff mean? ...
I have been working for this company for about 18 month and so far so good. It was even bought out by a bigger company and everything stayed the same with no problems. They don't bother me, I do my work and everything is fine. About 6 months ago my line count started going way down and I really just chalked it up to not being able to concentrate as much because my baby started walking and basically making it impossible for me to work. For the past week my line count has about doubled. ...
Over an hour into my shift, I went to check my line count, so that I can keep track hourly.. well it has ZERO... nothing has taken effect yet??? is this normal. ...
I have been told that I need to increase my LPH. So last night I kept track of the lines of each document done by using MS Word. But later when I compared it to Nuance's line tracker (ichart) it only listed half the lines that MS Word listed. How can this be? I realized that Word my count blank lines, but how can there possibly be that much difference? I felt like I really kicked butt last night, but then to look at LPH with Nuance's ichart I felt cheated/ ...
So far, I have calculated the "count score" on Fluency at the new rate of 0.08/.048 vs per report rate. I 'lost' on average $165-175 per pay period over the past 3 months by the line count. My report rates are currently 1.20/.072.
Anyone else? Please share.
Also, the 'count score' is our line count, right?? ...
Anyone else struggling to get their lines in at AP after loosing a hospital recently? Maybe I'm signing on at the wrong time of day but usually there are hardly any jobs for at least an hour after I start the day. Hope I'm not alone or I am doing something very wrong. ...
"So if the company wants to consistently give me a slightly higher line count than I am able to document at my end, I should have a problem with this... why??"
Wow. Crankybeach. You are old enough that you should not need to ask that question. Here are a few of the more publicized examples of "why":
Exhibit A: Enron. Lots of people played along and look at the end result.Exhibit B: Madoff. Lots of people played along and look at the end result.Exhibit ...
I used to do 250-275 lph fairly easily. Lately, I am typing as fast and furious as ever and struggle to get above 200 lph. Not sure what is going on, but I'm pretty sure it ain't me.
Also, when did they change the dictating system over to 2 cans and a piece of string? I CANNOT hear this CRAP. Even the American guys are starting to sound wind-tunnelish ...
Is it typical to only receive a percentage of your edited lines because "editing is faster and better" than straight transcription? I am new to VR, but this seems odd to me. No wonder I am being paid a decent rate. LOL So, when I edit a 50-line report, I only receive 60% of that report. I'm just curious if this across the board with all companies?? ...
What in the heck does .05 for every 43 black characters equal out to. It doesn't sound good but I'm no math whiz. Maybe, I'm missing something and who pays like that. What happened to X-amount of cpl based on a 65-character line..or even a gross line. I suspect it's a sneaky way to screw you but I could be wrong. ...
I was checking my line count, went back and checked it later, and it was down! Not the first time I have seen this. Seriously, I am feeling like we are being set up to fail in a MAJOR way! Issues with the line count, QA getting tougher, it is all adding up to on big set up-at least, that is the way it has been feeling to me lately. It is hard to stay focused when you feel like your work may disappear at any moment, or get in trouble with QA because of horrendous dictation ...
Can anyone tell me what their average line count is per day? (just the total not separated between work type). Im not trying to be nosey and I don't know who any of you are personally, I'm just trying to get an idea where I stand compared to everyone else here. I have been at Medquist for many years and seen many changes. Over the years, my line count has gone up and my pay has gone down. I am trying to determine if the reason is mostly me or mostly medquist changes and if th ...
Why is 5/24/2010 showing up twice on my monthly totals and when I run detail on this it is showing less jobs? Called tech support and they dont know. I'm sure I'm going to get ripped off of lines. I did take a picture of my computer screen showing this error so if my paycheck is wrong I have evidence. Is this happening to anyone else? ...

Below is a response when asked to clarify compensation from a prospective employer. As an "old school" MT, I am unsure as to how to interpret this. I've always been paid by th hour. I need to make a decision. Thanks in advance -
