That's absolutely ridiculous that they wouldn't provide you with that information at some point before starting.
Do you remember discussing it at all in an interview? Usually they tell you what they will pay and it's up to you to decide at that point if you will accept the job on that number.
Look over any hiring documents closely to make sure it's not in there and you may have missed it.
