Who asked those three men to be there? Why were they carrying weapons? You have a 36, 26, and 26 year old men chasing a boy and battering him, of course it's self-defense. Don't tell your children to wait to see what's going to happen before they start to defend themselves. Once the fear of death is in front of you, you should take action!
