where the contractor is required to get a tax ID number, have a business license and a DBA name if needed.
Most of these MTSOs are not hiring true independent contractors. They're just using people to avoid paying FICA, matching Social Security, state unemployment taxes, providing paid time off, etc.
I'm very surprised this has never been investigated since it's so rampant now.
Independent contractors should be paid sufficiently to cover the costs of providing all their own benefits and paying their own taxes, which would probably be over $.12 a line.
Unfortunately, though, there's now a workforce of stay-at-home moms and retired people who are okay with these current pay rates and contractor status.
