It was more lucrative for some transcriptionists to be paid by the line - sm

rather than hourly. A lot of transcriptionists have a lot of shortcuts that don't require typing all the words or entire reports and they found they could make 20, 30, or more an hour rather than being stuck at the 13 or 14 an hour that the hospital/clinic/service would top their pay out at. And, of course, it was definitely more lucrative for a transcription company to charge by the line. I don't know what the comparison is now for MTSO versus transcription pay, but in my opinion now it would seem that these companies are making more off the transcriptionist per line than they used to. As transcriptionists being paid in this manner, we certainly haven't had any benefits throughout the years from the cuts in pay, nothing to compensate us for doing the same work even though technology has changed.
