I get what you're saying - sleepy mt Posted: Apr 2nd, 2019 - 6:37 pm In Reply to: Never have I ever seen this in a - report before.
My religious beliefs aside, I think putting a message like this is unnecessary in a professional/legal document regardless of whether the hospital is faith-based or not. I transcribe a lot of faith-based hospitals and practices and have never seen this. Also, the chances of this patient ever seeing this is very low. Basiclly, it seems this doctor dictated this for himself, not the patient.
Doctors often pray for their patients or pray before a surgery. Depending on the practice, it will be a private matter (saying it to themselves) or the staff will take a moment of silence before a surgery. When my mother had eye surgery, they asked ahead of time whether she would like to have a prayer said beforehand aloud. She agreed. No big deal. However, they don't mention or say anything about spiritual beliefs/prayers/etc in their records or transcribed reports.
My parents were docs. It wouldn't even occur to them to put a prayer or anything other than "we wish them well" if that...and they are very religious people.
I asked my doctors about this. They were a bit surprised. Even though they are from different institutions and backgrounds, they all said it would not occur to them to put a prayer or anything close to it in a report. They put in the facts of the case and their recommendations, etc. That's it. They all brought up the fact of it being a legal medical document and that it wasn't appropriate for them to put in anything about their spiritual/personal feelings, no matter how they truly care for the patient. When it comes to medical reports, they feel their job is to document the case and that's it. However, several mentioned that they will say a prayer with a patient or family during a visit or prior to an operation, etc. and that it wasn't uncommon. There was just no reason to put it in the report.
