the principal can exercise the option of not paying the contractor until assurance is made that the subcontractors (and employees) have been paid, and they may well exercise this option to ensure they will not be facing lawsuits themselves. if you are uncertain that you are going to be paid, by all means pick up the phone and speak to the hospital's legal counsel/administor directly.
