The thing is, I could put up a gofundme with the same exact story - liars and beggars

Nothing is stopping me, or anyone else from doing that. I happen to have enough morals and decency not to, but the world is full of scammers and thieves who do this all the time. So when you look at gofundme and other sites, there are TONS of them that have absolutely zero proof of what they are claiming as their hardship. And people still give them money.

Yes there are people who are down on their luck. I've been there many times myself, mostly long before there was the internet full of strangers to beg money from. I had to ask family for help, that's what we did back then. And then we PAID IT BACK!

Sorry, I will never understand or agree with the concept of asking for/giving strangers money that is never paid back.

There are organizations that help homeless people, battered women, kids who are not getting presents for xmas, etc. That's what they do. These internet sites are mostly full of scammers. You see it time and again. And until they can find a way to weed them out, I would never trust them.
