Don't try to finance anything if you know you are going to be laid off unless you have another job lined up, have a nice cushion in your savings account or plan to pay cash. When you say "died," is it fixable? It might be wise to have the repairs done and drive it a little longer until you know where you are going to land. I went through a layoff a while back and needed a new car badly but held it together and used public transportation when I could until I had another job and got some money saved for a down payment then got a new one, swore I wouldn't be unemployed with a car payment.
