captioning - anon

Your comments about the job are exactly what I have I have learned so far through much research and talking to schools and captioners. Some is done on-site with the keyboard and is not real-time. Live captioning is done on the steno machine and pays far better. (Have to look into Stenomask.) The on-site appears to pay about what we're making. The steno machine is nothing like QWERTY, but I was referring to much of the other skill set we have being a very good match for captioning. It appears very challenging to learn and get fast enough, but people do it. The school I mentioned has a course and "theory" developed specifically for online learning and they are very vocal about working closely with students and making sure they can get their speeds past discouraging plateaus. I don't think there is anything quick or easy about captioning, but it looks like a legitimate option for regaining financial independence. It clearly isn't for everybody, but I for one am seriously considering it.
