court reporting - anon

Posted: Jan 23rd, 2016 - 2:12 pm In Reply to: Funny, I was just looking at a scoping school website - last night...looked interesting

I started court reporting school many years ago and didn't finish. Sometimes I wonder if I would be better off completing it rather than doing MT like I am now.

Just out of curiosity, I looked at the school's website recently. They still have a Court Reporting/Realtime Reporting program. It now can be taken completely online and the tuition is $30,000! It was around $5,000 when I attended. Not to mention the thousands you have to spend on purchasing your own machine, computer software, etc. Ridiculous.

Back in the day, I just couldn't reach the speed on the machine to graduate and gave up. Two students I started the program with really worked hard, breezed through the program, graduated and got great jobs. I wonder what the industry is like now.

I would think it would be tough to do scoping for court reporters. A lot of them create their own shorthand, like MTs create their own expanders or templates or whatever. A lot has probably changed though since I was involved in it.

I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has experience or input on this topic as I've often wondered how the field is fairing.
