Stenomask reporters don't use the steno machines - Shannon

what they use is a mask-like device and they basically repeat or dictate what is being said in the deposition or court room. The concentration required for this is INTENSE. They do also use an open mike, as least 1 anyway, as well as the recorder they are speaking into. As long as I worked for her, there was never an instance where we couldn't catch what was being said, by the witness, attorneys, judge, etc. I couldn't handle the stress and anxiety that comes with court reporting, honestly. Wish I could have. Many of the Stenomask reporters were going to speech recognition software and many CRs were taking jobs closed captioning for TV, conferences, live TV, etc., because they had their speech software "trained" and were very sufficient. I don't believe it was Dragon, I think it was another one, but I'm not sure. The transcriptionist or scopist would then take the rough draft and edit it and make sure it was correct.

If you or anyone else is thinking about going into court reporting, especially since you have completed so much training in it already, see what information you can find regarding the Stenomask reporting as opposed to using the stenograph.
