I've been working in the MT world since the mid-70s. For the first 10 years or so of my MT life, AAMT and the BOS never existed and people managed just fine. Then, it was getting the proper training in school and on the job. When I worked in hospitals, we used the JCAH rules more than anything else. In offices, it was what the doctors wanted. I've never purchased a BOS, my employers have always provided one. I hope people are not trying to memorize that book! I currently use it as a reference when I do my reviews, but I have a lot of other references that I use as well. Facilities do consider it the gold standard because that is what they were told.
