Practicum - Coder

Posted: Oct 7th, 2015 - 12:43 pm In Reply to: If you are taking a basic course to help you pass the CPC exam - The elephant in the room

If you do a practicum, like Practicode on AAPC's website, you will get experience directly applying codes to reports. It's not multiple choice but actually coding real reports and it's not too expensive. It will also allow you to remove the apprentice designation from your CPC-A. I took AAPC's CPC course and they included practical exercises within that course but I also did the virtual practicum to get more practice. There are also clinical coding workouts that you can purchase from AHIMA for a very affordable amount to get experience coding real reports as well. If you want to learn coding you can do it. There are lots of resources out there without spending a huge amount of cash. You can also usually find practice coding exercises online for free in magazines like For The Record, Advance, etc., especially for ICD-10 coding. Getting a membership with AHIMA and AAPC will also help greatly because you will have access to lots of resources (like AHIMA's Book of Knowledge).
