A few years ago during another 10-day triple-digit heatwave I bought a Handy Cooler to supplement my struggling swamp cooler. (The original MIT reviewed cooling table fan, not all the cheaper knockoffs.) I live in a very dry climate, which is where that works best rather than a humid place, and I have to say it worked really well. I think they're still around, although probably more expensive than originally, but it might be something that could help you, and certainly much cheaper than a full-size air conditioner.
