1. You will see the self-review when they email to tell you it is due. It will then be in your account to select, if I recall correctly. (You cannot just do them any time.)

2. The 18 for ICD-10 are included in the total. You do not need to do 18 + 20.

3. AHA and CMS both have free CEUs. Sign up! Get on mailing lists for those, as well as medical instrumentation companies like cardiac cath, rad onc, and interventional equipment.

There are occasional free CEUs offered by companies that offer paid webinars.

4. Never underestimate the power of inservices where you work! You can get approval from AAPC for those, too, and it is free if you do not charge attendees. Look around at other facilities in your area to see if they have anything going on. (We don't mind if outside coders pop in for ours. Get to know coders in your area who can tell you when things are offered.)

5. Physician CME presentations may qualify, too.

6. If you have AAPC credentials, those CEUs may qualify. Their local chapter meetings include a presentation, some of which may be appropriate for AHIMA. Just be aware that not everything would be suitable. I would not use something on doctors' office management or billing concerns, for example.

7. Many employers offer CEU presentations and some provide an allowance for continuing education. Some just pay for job-relevant training. I can usually score a course from someone like HCPro every couple of years.

8. Companies like HCPro, Super Coder, Coding Answers, etc., charge, but sometimes offer freebies.

9. Other organizations, like HIMSS, often have freebies. Get on their mailing lists.

There is a guide to CEUs on the AHIMA website. You should be able to get some ideas from that. Remember that AHIMA CEUs do not have to be preapproved; you determine if they are suitable. AAPC must be AAPC-preapproved, but they will accept CEUs issued by AHIMA itself, CMS, and AHA.
