yes, if the person/company you are working for files it as a business expense that they paid you as an independent contractor---which most do, as it would be illegal not do so.

It is also illegal for you to work as an IC and not declare it on your tax returns.

But if, you work for Dr. X and he does not report it, and you get paid (this is an IC), and you don't declare it, how would they know?

People do things in trade all the time, technically that is an IC relationship, but no one pays taxes.

I would be very hesitant to assume that anyone would not file it on their return as an expense. And, of course, if you receive a 1099 you must file that as your IC income.
