proper use of possessives, need an expert grammar opinion - LadyWriter

Posted: Dec 17, 2012

Several years ago, Book of Style made the recommendation to drop the possessive form for names of tests, diseases, etc. - i.e., Alzheimer's disease is now Alzheimer disease BUT is Alzheimer's when standing alone, i.e., I have Alzheimer's (disease implied but not written) and most facilities have since adopted this practice. That said, if a doctor refers to an instrument such as Metzenbaum scissors, there is no possessive used....but if doctor says "I used the Metzenbaum's to widen the incision" this would be the correct usage when Metzenbaum stands alone, yes? Or would you say "I used the Metzenbaums to widen the incision." ???? I don't think this is an issue of these diseases, instruments and the like being named after someone that determines the possessive use, but rather these are nouns and use of the possessive depends on how they are used. Such as "I'm going to my brother's home" correct, yes? And "I'm going to my brother's" is also correct. Yes? From what I read in the Book of Style (which my new workplace uses as a guide), I feel it would be incorrect to write "I used the Metzenbaums to widen the incision." But I'm being told that this is fine to write it this way. I'm just looking for feedback or other links that support my view and if I'm wrong on this, I'd like to learn the basis supporting that view. Thanks for reading this!

Is this a verbatim account?

I would transcribe Metzenbaum scissors as a first choice, as that is what is meant.

If completely verbatim, then Metzenbaums is fine (the s is implied as in scissors).

No, it's not a total verbatim account, and I've been just writing out Metzenbaum scissors as my first choice. However, I'm running into other issues with ready-made templates with such things as 1000 mL Ringers, and I feel it should be 1000 mL Ringer's...or Mayos...just a small example. I dunno, maybe I should just go with the flow and stop making noise about this...it just annoys me because I like my documents to be perfect as can be :)

What belonged to the Metzenbaums that he used? - MT2Coder

Usage with instruments is slightly different. Metzenbaum scissors . . . Metzenbaums.

That's just a plain old plural, not a possessive.

If you cannot answer the question of "what belonged to the Metzenbaums," it is not possessive and no apostrophe should be used.

If you want to say "I used the Metzenbaum's to widen the incision". . . you have to ask yourself . . . "I used the Metzenbaum's WHAT to widen the incision?" The screw? The handle? The box it came in?

If the dictator said "I used the Metzenbaum's blade to . . . " then it gets an apostrophe. Just plain "I used the Metzenbaums" does not. It's no different than "I used the scissors."

Apostrophes - Metzenbaum

[ In Reply To ..]
The apostrophe belongs there, but they're not wanting us to use it. The apostrophe simply means that the s is not part of the brand name, so it should be separated out. The apostrophe in this case isn't possessive and isn't meant to be.

I just use Metzenbaum.
