With most companies using VR nowadays...sm - Oh, bother

Posted: Dec 06, 2010

Can anyone tell me if you are making good money or even a somewhat decent paycheck now doing voice rec?  There was a time in this business that I was making $40 per hour but not anymore.  I have a job now outside of the house that I absolutely hate and part of that is because it is an hourly paying job.  My ability to make what I want and desperately need is gone and I just have to have it back.  I can't leave this job though if it is absolutely hopeless out there.  Is anyone making a good paycheck doing just speech rec?  Good can be $50 a day, $100 a day, and anything beyond that would be gravy money for me.

My experience - carolMT

I could make $30 to $40 an hour too until voice rec. (I was one of the highest producers). Cut my pay by 40% and it takes me longer to edit than straight type (still one of the highest producers). Fortunately, found a second job (local, not MTSO) straight typing that makes up the difference, but I have to work more hours, between the 2 jobs, for the same amount of annual income.

Sadly, I am making about $10 an hour on VR. - nm

roughly what you do at transcription. If you've kept your skills up to date technically and have always worked fast and hard as an MT, you'll no doubt make sure you develop the same high skill level doing ME.

If you haven't changed your work techniques in the past few years to advance with new technology, you're probably significantly slower than you should be now at MT and will likely also be so as at ME--unless you decide to get your skills up to date.

Even people working the same way they were 15 years ago, though, are able to top $100 a day editing, which would be appallingly low pay. Anybody working a full schedule for that money is either very unsuited to the work, very underskilled, or very underpaid.

$30/hour is still doable, perhaps not on hourly pay, but a fair number of production-pay employees are still bringing that in within a 40-hour work week. Not by relaxing and chatting in between reports, though.

Good luck. Think positive. You may well be one of the many who like editing better than transcription and one of the many who use being paid on their own production to increase their income well above what hourly would pay.

Oh bother/oh my/full of it. - wise1

This sounds totally like an MTSO or company rep trying the rah rah new technology is great, is your fault routine...
Only do as fast as the dictator can speak... is a considerable CUT ...

Yes, wise1. Very to the point. Speed that dictation up. - Pragmatist

Editing is not limited by the old WPM typing speeds, so to make money it's very important to listen just as fast as you can read. Practice reading and dropping in corrections faster and faster. Today's version of developing WPM typing speed. Learn to speed read if that'll help.

No way, no how...UNLESS you're one of the few making 6+ cpl - for ME

[ In Reply To ..]
Two years ago I left a company paying a whopping 3 cpl for ME and said it was industry standard. I was making 10 cpl straight typing and consistently produced 270+ lines per hour. Despite the fact that I would have needed to triple my production per hour, I never even hit 500 lines per hour consistently. So I went with a company that did majority straight typing (MDI) until they sold to Transcend. They paid us 4 cpl (yet some insist they're making way more than that with Transquid). I was paid 10 cpl for straight typing with MDI at 250+ consistently per hour. I worked on ME with them for a year before I quit. There were times I could make 550 lines per hour, but never consistently.

I'm now working for a company that pays 6+ cpl for ME, but I still cannot double my line production on ME. I'm averaging 300 lph consistently on straight typing. It's not that I'm not experienced with ME, as I've been doing it for almost 4 years now. I just think it is IMPOSSIBLE to *consistently* produce 600+ lines an hour on VR, 40 hours a week. Anyone who says that they are doing this day in and day out without getting burned out after a month is just not being honest and is deceiving those new to VR, who will in no way, shape, or form consistently produce 600+ lph in the first year...especially if being paid less than 6 cpl.

Been on VR for 6 weeks. I am averaging about $18-$19 an hour. - I get 5.25 cents a line on VR. nm

Yesterday I made $22/hour but today only $17/hour. Yesterday I had good dictators, decent drafts, was able to get up to a good speed. Today not so much. But tomorrow is a new day....we'll see.

What Type Of Ear Phones Are MTs Using Nowadays?
Jul 09, 2014

What type of ear phones are MTs using nowadays?  I keep breaking my head set (the wires break inside and I have to hold them just right to use them).   It never occurred to me that the 15,000 (slight exag) ear buds I have in the house (young kids from every electonic ever known to man) has a set.  They seem to work fine.  Is there any reason not to use ear buds versus my old style stethoscope ear phones?  EBAY actually had an ad for Apple ear buds for $2.99 including free shipping!  I cou ...

What Is With These Companies?
Dec 30, 2009

Can anyone answer me why is it that these MT companies hire you and they all promise you the sun, moon and stars.  Oh we have TONS of work. We guarantee you at least 11 accounts and 2,500 lines a day. Then you are sitting there 6 months later, waiting for jobs? I have experienced this many times. Can it be that its just bad management and they overhire? Does anyone know of a company that really does have TONS of work? Any Companies Who Do Not Use VR? (sm)
Jun 02, 2010

The company I work for has gone VR (on most jobs).  I cannot make any money doing this.  My pay has been cut approximately $150 to $200 every two weeks.  They have already taken away the incentives, and now if you screw up a couple of times on demographics, you do not get paid for the job, and the third or fourth time you are pulled from the account.  I am just so frustrated.  This VR is killing me.  It takes more time to make corrections.  It is frustrati ...

Can Someone Tell My Why Companies Do This?
Sep 30, 2010

So, I see it all of the time, people on here complaining about no work, yet the company they are complaining about is HIRING.  My job recently did this as well.  I am day after day running out of work, but yet I see an ad that they are hiring!  I e-mailed the owner and asked about it and she didn't reply.  I UNDERSTAND that they are hiring for a different account, BUT, since it's all transcribing, why not just move some people around and give those extra accounts to ...

Companies Using XP
Apr 29, 2011

Periodically, I will cruise the MT help wanted, and see some companies that list the system requirements as "must have XP."  My question is this:  I wonder if they mean must have at least XP or do they mean MUST HAVE XP.  I find it difficult to believe that any system out there only works with XP, as Vista has been around for a good long while and even Windows 7 (which I wish DocQ would update to) has been out for a bit.  I mean, it would be very difficult to find a computer ...
