VR and Mitch Miller Sing-A-Long - DJ

Posted: Nov 08, 2014

For those of us old enough to remember the Mitch Miller sing along -- doesn't VR kind of remind you of that? I work in Escription and the Alt-K that moves you along with the text is kind of like that old bouncing ball - except the notes and the lyrics are all wrong -- LOL. I had a new PA today who was not recognized by VR and had to do straight typing and I averaged 225 lph, compared to my usual 250-300 with VR, except got paid much more for it.  Makes me want to look for a job that is straight typing.  You can get a "rhythm" going with straight typing as opposed to the VR "interuptus" that happens with speech recognition.  Can't wait to retire!

Ha!!! You are right! - sm

Thanks for making me laugh, DJ. I sure do remember the bouncing ball "Tea for 2, and 2 for tea..." Sing Along with Mitch. Were you singing along with the dictation? :)

Not singing along - DJ

No, not singing along, more like "cursing along" with the cursor!

No kidding! I'm jealous if you are that close to retiring! - PandaBear

I've got at least 15 years before I can. I can't believe I actually wish I were OLDER!

LOL! Wait'll you take a typing test for a new job - sometime.. you"ll be blown away - sm

by how slow your regular typing speed has become after doing VR for a while. I was shocked! Used to test at around 82 words per minute, and my first typing test was awful - about 45 words per min. after a few typos were factored in. :(

Spam Emails From Catherine Miller
Apr 25, 2013

Recently I started getting emails from Catherine Miller, advertising jobs and/or MT courses. I did at one time subscribe to her services, about 4 or 5 years ago, but cancelled because they were pretty much useless, and I can find work on my own. The odd thing is that it was under a different email address, so how did she get my current email address, which I've only had for a year and in a different state? I wonder if MModal is selling our private email addresses. ...

Geez!  I was hired by a national last Friday.  It is a full week later, and they haven't even gotten all the paperwork done.  I thought I had completed it all and then they said human resources forgot a few papers.  Well, they have yet to email them to me today.  I thought I would be at least training by now.  It has been a full week.  I mean they still have to install software on my computer, and I still have to train on ES and the account specs.  Ge ...

Why Does It Take So Long?
Mar 08, 2011

Anyone out there notice this?  That it takes twice as long to do an op note anymore in ASR what with all the cutting, pasting, standards, going back to check whether or not to delete headings, blah, blah.  It used to be a cinch to simply bring in one of my standards and make the appropriate changes according to the audio, but now with ASR, it takes twice as long.  I feel like I'm running in place and going nowhere just to make ASR learn something.  It's such a waste ...

How Long Does It Take To Not Be Known As An MT
Jan 24, 2013

I have known where this 'profession' was headed for years; even in the late 1990s I knew. I earned the education that I need with both an associate degree and bachelor's degree (bachelor's degree from Big 10 university) and, still, many people view me as an MT, which we can all agree is not good. I have experience in my new line of work, and I have worked in that field in the past. How long is it really going to take before people do not view me with all the negative stereoty ...

How Long Did It Take You To Get Off Of QA?
Dec 01, 2014

I have only been working a couple of months at Nuance and I am just wondering how long it takes to get off of QA and become DSP status.  It feels like QA is nitpicking me to death.  This is the longest I have ever been on QA before.  How long does it generally take to get off of QA.  My last audit was 99.85%.   I cannot seem to get a straight answer from my TSM either... ...

That Took Me Long Enough!
Mar 23, 2015

I quit today. No 2 weeks notice. No anything. "You won't ever be able to work for Nuance again if you do this." That's like saying, "You won't ever be able to hit yourself in the face with a hammer again if you throw it away."  There is NO WAY an MT can survive not knowing what they will make week to week. Who can budget like that? They can stick their "compensation plan" up their yin yang.  I am free!  :)  ...

After Long Deliberation
Feb 16, 2010

After over a year without an MT job I have decided to turn my degree into a Nursing assistant degree. Not to say the MT jobs aren't out there it is just tough for newer MT's to land them with all of the competition. Employers have the right and the demand to be very picky with everyone vying for the position. Good luck to everyone who stays and does well in the MT business but it is time for me to turn my dreams into reality and start making a little green. ...
