I just loaded my Stedman's medical spellchecker on my new PC - MedTran

Posted: Feb 25, 2010

but it's not working in Word.  Is there something I need to check or uncheck in Word so that it is my default dictionary?  All I see when I open options, Spelling and Grammar, Custome Dictionaries, is custom.dic (default) checked, but it is not my medical dictionary.

Thanks!

Go to options, spelling and grammar, and on the right is...sm - This should do it.

"speller type." Click on the drop-down menu and set it for "medical." Click on "okay" and you should be good to go.

Sorry, don't see drop down men on right that says - speller type. Any other suggestions

Thanks for your help.

I have the 2009 Spellchecker and MS Office 2003 and I do not see - MedTran

any kind of speller type or drop down menu that says "medical." When I installed it, it said it was installed successfully, but it is not working.

Any other suggestions? I was logged into Word Client when I installed it, could that have messed things up?

Did it warn you to close all open applications? Most s/w does. - SM

Go to Tools/Options/Spelling and click the Dictionaries button. Custom.dic should be checked and your spelling dictionary should be checked.
It probably did warn me, but I probably wasn't paying attention. - MedTran

I only have custom.dic available to check. I did find the stedmans spellchecker, but there are several files in the folder and I'm not sure which one it would be. I believe the file extension is .lex, but there are several that end in .lex. I've tried them all and still show medical words that spelled correctly misspelled.

Stedman's speller - Mine is

set (box checked) as my custom dictionary in Word, but it's been on there for so long that I'm not positive how I set it that way! Nowhere do you see any indication that it is Stedman's, at least not in Word. I do remember setting testing the Stedman's to make sure all of the "chapters" (for want of a better word) were working correctly, by spelling a word wrong and seeing if it was underlined, etc. Was there an option when you were installing the software that could have asked you if you wanted to set is as your custom/default dictionary?

It could very well be that - MT4ever

the 2002 version of Stedman's spellecher is no longer supported so it will no longer work after re-installation. You may have to upgrade to a newer version of Stedman's.

Did you check the Stedman's site to make sure - SM

your 2002 version is compatible with Word 2007?

I am thinking of buying/downloading Stedman's Spellchecker but had a question and wondered if anyone here can help me out. They have Spellchecker Plus for $99.95 and also Spellchecker Plus for $39.95. It looks as though the latter might be an update, but the descriptions are basically the same. Does Anyone Use Stedman's Medical Word Spellcheck
Feb 05, 2014

I always had this through work, and now I need to buy my own.  Are you allowed to borrow, or people share a license?   I don't know how this works, I've never done it. Is there another program similar to it, maybe a bit less in price?  I definitely do NOT want to spend $100 on it, let alone have to pay to renew any licensing or get upgrades every year.   I'd really like to buy it once and be done with it,  is that possible? What happens if you ...
