How to gain experience if nobody will hire you - MDLady

Posted: Apr 06, 2010

I am a relatively new MT working in a large hospital in a subspecialty (Dermatopathology). My goal is to work at home and all job openings I see for working at home require experience working in acute care.   I graduated from a 2 year college last year and received an Associates of Science degree in Office Administration with a major in Medical Transcription. I am pretty sure that my college degree got me this MT job since I had no previous work experience.  I never heard of Dermatopathology before, but in less than 2 months after starting, I have been transcribing like I have been working in this specialty for years.  How can I prove to other companies that I am very trainable and can learn quickly? How do I get the acute care experience  when nobody will hire me without it?

why not - anon

attempt to get acute care experience within your own hospital system? That is a no-brainer. You are right there, and in-house jobs are not as easy to get as they once were. You can gain very valuable and broad experience in the hospital, and then later on you WILL be marketable to companies. Be very careful, though, if you decide to jump the hospital ship. Many at home MTs are wishing they could get back in-house.

Read the main, company and MQ boards on here.

I can vouch for that - me

I left an in house job because it was way too late, I wanted to go part time, and I hated driving in every day and running my kids to and from daycare. I did find a job online, but the pay is barely 60% of what I was making before, and the benifit suck. Essentially now I am making what I could have made part time if they would have let me within the hospital (which they wouldn't; I had horrible managers).

It's all about compromise I guess.

not as easy as it sounds - MDLady

Well, that is the problem since the department that does acute care at this hospital (Radiology and Surgical Pathology) are not hiring and the other hospitals in my state require experience. I don't wanna work 10-20 years in one specialty; that sounds too boring for me, so I am looking around and not giving up hope. I just wanted to vent. I guess I just don't understand that age-old theory and nobody seems to be able to answer the question: How do you get job experience if nobody will hire you?

People will hire you, they just won't pay well - :-)

good luck

Part of that depends on how you test - Different levels

[ In Reply To ..]
Most employers hire on MTs at different levels, depending on how they do on the employment test. Sometimes everyone goes in at the same level but you go up a level a soon a you go off 100% Q/A and when they know they can trust you to do a good job. If you stay at the lower levels, that means you need to improve your skills.

Just a question for everyone.  I accepted a position and was to hear by the end of this week from my manager about doing some training on Tuesday of next week and have not heard one word.  I did receive foot pedal, etc.  I put a call out to the recruiter who told me my manager was going to contact me, but of course at MQ you always have to leave a message.  Is this the norm for new employees?????  Any comments are appreciated. ...

Why Don't The Big Companies Want To Hire
May 31, 2010

part-timers for weekend work anymore?  That's the way it was done for years, full-timers for M-F and part-timers for weekends, and it worked great because so many MTs are looking for extra weekend part-time work anyway.  It seems to be mostly the bigger corporations, as usual, changing things for the worse here.  Is it just the laziness of the HR & management people, not wanting to process part-timers?  I suspect a lot of the very-experienced MTs are working at small ...

I Really Don't Think It's Just To Continuously Hire MTs
Nov 26, 2012

as employees, yet the MTs are still on production instead of hourly, and the new hires never get any work to do.  If they do get any work, it's not enough to live on.  They want you to sit there until they have enough "extra" for you to do?? How is that right?  There must be some kind of fraud or something legally that I don't know about that can take these companies to task for doing this to people.  I'm tired of being treated this way, starving all the way t ...

New Hire And OOW - On First Live Day? Sm
Apr 24, 2014

Seriously?  Is this typical?  Love how recruitment hyped this place up.  New PT hire, assigned one primary acct, finished the umpteen hours of training, released to TSM and on my first "live" day of work my account is OOW?  Then receive a zip file of emails from TSM sent to the ENTIRE team which include prior employee resignation letters, employees being reprimanded, and the kicker - TSM acknowledges that the work volume on the account that I was assigned to wasn't ...

Any Companies Hire M-F?
May 15, 2014

I know this is an extreme long-shot, but I'm wondering if there are any good MT companies out there that hire M-F and pay a fair line rate (for the way things are today anyway). It doesn't matter to me whether I work employee or IC. I just left Nuance a couple months ago and am working general transcription on my own schedule right now, but it's way too strenuous for the pay rate and the work is sporadic. I've got to figure out my next move, but I hate to go back to working e ...

Current New-hire TTS MTs?

New-Hire Communication
Jan 11, 2015

I just started with Nuance this past week.  During the hiring process, I had good communication with the recruiter.  During training, there was good communication with the person in charge of my training.  However, since my first day on the job, I have only heard from my TSM once, and that was a bulk e-mail to lots of people.   Is this typical?  I've been reviewing my QA in Fiesa and making notes, but should I be expecting any other kind of feedback or communication ...
