Career Step - is a good school to attend for MT training - peacefulsoles

Posted: Jan 15, 2011

I would like to know if anyone thinks Career Step is a good school to attend for MT training. Andrews and MTEC are quite a bit more expensive and I don't think I can afford them. I can't really afford Career Step. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

The only thing I can tell you is........... - nm

My Daughter-in-law took the Career Step course and is doing wonderful. I think it's a good course.

Schools - MT

Personally, before you decide, I would ask them if they have instructors to ask questions of. Last time I heard, they did not, and I frankly chose to go to a school that has instructors who will work with you so you are totally prepared for the arduous haul...which brings me to my next point.

Have you thought long and hard about doing this? Even in the great days, it wasn't easy, but at least there was money to be made.

If you've already decided you are going to do this no matter what anyone says, then choose your school very, very carefully. Some companies WILL test people from Career Step, so you are probably okay at least getting your foot in a door from one of the bigger national companies.

Good luck!

Yes, Career Step is a great MT school. I graduated 2-1/2 years ago and have had no problems getting MT jobs. The day after graduating I was hired with Spheris. I have since moved on to being an IC for the flexibility, but the employers I have encountered have been very impressed with Career Step graduates and it is a plus to have it on my resume. Also, they have their own forum and fellow students and grads help each other out, along with Career Step staff. So, in my opinion Career Step is a great place to get your education.

How do people just learning MT "help" someone else just learning MT? Also, recent grad is still "green," even from a good school. I can see someone who has been doing MT (acute care, specifically) for a couple of years after graduating helping people, but I don't think anything can compare to having instructors to begin with.

I realize there are some happily employed Career Step people out there. I'm just throwing this out there for others to ponder when choosing a school.

You can call Career Step Student Services if you need extra help or email them and they will help you if you are struggling. I guess it really depends on what kind of student you are. Some people like an instructor to talk them through things, but I preferred to just do the work on my own at my own pace. If I got frustrated about a certain section, I could talk about it with fellow students on the forum so that I didn't feel alone. I never felt the need to have an instructor because the course is very well laid out.

Perhaps if they had real live instructors rather than relying on other students and answer keys, they would not reach the point where they are "struggling." Talking with fellow students on a forum may be a way to vent, but you need professional PEOPLE instructing you.

someone there all the time to hold your hand and coach you, MTing is not for you. You have to be able to figure things out and troubleshoot for yourself. You have to have a lot of discipline to push through a self-led course and even more to get through those first few months relying only on yourself in those first few months on the job. JMO!

Sorry, I respectfully stand by my opinion: You cannot teach yourself what you do not know, and you cannot know what you do not know. Much better to have instructors!

I would have to agree with Old Pro on this. School is not the place to "figure things out and troubleshoot for yourself." You're in school to receive the education needed to succeed in a career. I don't know of any other type of school or university that "teaches" without instructors. Why should an MT course be any different?

Can you imagine learning to be a neurosurgeon by a "teach yourself, paint by the numbers" method? An engineer? A hairstylist? Enough said.

You cannot NOT afford them. Do you really want to go to a school where you grade yourself with an answer key (CareerStep)or do you want a school with real, live instructors? (Andrews and M-TEC.) Stop and consider what an investment this will be. Have you spoken to M-TEC and Andrews about loans, student assistance, etc? I am not and have never been associated with any school. I just think why not give yourself the best chance you can?

Second that! - see msg

I agree with giving yourself the best chance you can.

Try to avoid the impulse to consider the first-quoted cost as the total cost. Some schools tell you a low figure without mentioning what isn't included, while others tell you the total cost that includes everything.

Please speak with the schools you think are too expensive. Maybe there is a reason they cost more, like they use expensive materials and offer unlimited instructor support and coach toward a high success rate. And maybe they have a very sensible payment plan that won't saddle you with debt.

I have never yet found an Andrews or M-TEC grad who could not get and keep a job.

To elaborate on the above poster's comments...I have never seen an Andrews or M-TEC grad (newbies) at my place of employment struggle like the CS newbie grads do. You can definitely tell which ones are better prepared right off the bat.

Email From Career Step (MT School): Truth Or Fiction?
Oct 16, 2012

I've been considering getting into the MT field, and I emailed my Career Step academic advisor last week to ask him what he thought about the future of MT.  Here was his response: ********** Thanks for the email.  I understand your concern about the future of the industry.  The rumors that Medical Transcription is going to be phased out in the future are not new.  We’ve been hearing such talk for over 20 years now, and the opposite has proven true thus far.& ...

Point Blank, What School Should I Attend
Aug 15, 2013

I am tired of the MT field because I can no longer make any money.  I have over ten years of experience being an MT and graduated from Andrew's, but I do not want to go back to school at Andrew's for coding/medical billing.  I have done medical billing in the distant past and I want to get back into it and start a new career outside of MT.  I want to get my skills current and use my past experience also.  I have not done medical billing in over 15 years.  So, m ...

Career Step MT And MTE
Sep 13, 2010

Hi, I haven't enrolled yet, but I've pretty much decided on Career Step (mostly because of price!). I was wondering if anyone has any input as to whether it's better to take the MT course or the MTE course. Do you need the extra editing experience? I'm sure any extra is helpful, but is it necessary to have the editing training to get an MT job with an online company? Thanks in advance for any info! ...

I was curious to hear if anybody failed the second part of the final? I got a 13% on the second part only because I was having serious trouble hearing the doctor clearly. I took that final last June, and I am wanting to take the final again in May. I am worried that I am going to come across the same problem even after practicing for so many months and getting helpful tips from the Career Step final. I am currently working part-time typing overflow reports and I am doing rather well with that. S ...

Disappointed In Career Step
May 29, 2010

I'm very disappointed regarding this medical editing course being offered by Career Step.  In my opinion it's a terrible way to take advantage of newbies who are worried about the job market and willing to pay anything to upgrade their skills, when every employer I've ever heard of trains their MTs on VR.  I can't imagine an employer requesting a course in medical editing in addition to the standard MT course.  I myself am a Career Step grad, have been gai ...

Career Step And Unemployment

I do not qualify for the displaced worker program and they will not let me keep my benifits if I chose to go to a regular community college. I have no idea how the reporting is done, but I would really like to get into coding (currently an MT). Andrews VS Career Step
Jan 26, 2011

Hi everyone, I have been looking at both Andrews and Career Steps programs for coding. I am leaning more towards Andrews, but I am worried about the amount of writing assignments you have to do. Are these long assignments? What type of stuff do you have to write about for a coding course (without giving away too much info)? Career Step is completely online, and for some reason that just does not seem like the best way to go. I feel that you really do need hands on kind of work, and I don' ...

Career Step Vs SUM Program?
Aug 25, 2011

I'm currently enrolled @ Career Step and stumbled across this forum tonight.  This is the first time I've heard about this SUM program.  Should I be nervous that Career Step doesn't use this program?  I admit, I did not have the money for Andrews or M-tec and thought the AHDI certification was the important thing.  Now I'm not so sure.  Will I be passed over by recruiting agents without this knowledge? Andrews Vs Career Step Sm
Apr 20, 2013

I am trying to decide between Andrews and Career Step for billing and coding.  The only question I have left is how the learning is done.  It looks like Career Step is study on your own. at your own pace.  I can't find anything one way or the other on the Andrews site - are there interactive online classes or is it study on your own and then test?  Also, Career Step says the tuition includes Complete set of industry codebooks (ICD-9-CM, CPT, HCPCS).  Andrews ju ...

Career Step Problems
Jan 30, 2015

I have to be honest. I truly felt that Career Step's training was thorough and prepared me well for a career as an MT. I had an extensive background in terminology, but the transcribing was new for me. Nonetheless, I completed all transcription modules with over 98% accuracy. I can type over 100 WPM. So, when it came time to take the final, I felt confident. I mean, I passed the multiple choice questions with flying colors and only got one wrong. But, apparently, I did so poorly on the tr ...

Career Step Or Andrews?
Apr 17, 2015

Can anyone tell me the difference in the 2 programs? Will someone come out of CS ready to sit for the CCS/CPC? I know/hear on here that Andrews has the best, most comprehensive program but Career Step has a job placement program after graduation ...granted it is low-paying, but it is more like an internship for 13 weeks. After that you can get hired for $15-$17/hour or more.... However their program is almost half what Andrews is.... I just am trying to make the best decision for myself. I am re ...
