if it is possible to DROP the health insurance? - FLMT

Posted: Aug 21, 2011

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to DROP the health insurance?  I can't make ends meet so I wanted to know if I could drop it and have additional money in my check

I have been wondering the same thing - I feel your pain

I am now choosing between buying my meds and buying groceries. I have always been able to work hard and support myself and live a fairly decent middle class lifestyle until the last couple of pay cuts. Very very very depressing.

Buying Meds or Groceries - sarmt

I'm also having to choose. My solution was to speak with my physician's nurse and explain about pay cuts. The office kindly provides sample medication and this allows me to buy groceries. So, see if physician will give you samples. This last pay cut is very depressing.

I dealt with that by (a) buying my meds at Walmart, - and (b) explaining my financial - sm

situation to my PCP, and what she did was raise the Rx from my regular 100 mg per day to 200 mg per day, regular 90-day supply. Then, I just break the pills in half, file down the sharp edges a little bit with a nail file, and voila - a 180-day supply for the same price.
Thanks for the med suggestions. - I will look into them

My PCP gives me samples, but hadn't thought about the cutting in half solution. Thanks for the tip!

I would think you could since it's an optional benefit, if you - Kiki

can actually call what they offer a benefit.

One way to do it if for some reason they won't let you drop it until next May at benefit renewal time would be to drop to 38 hours, thus be considered PT. When I wanted to drop to 35 hours my CCM said I'd lose the health benefits as well as 401k. Big deal on either. If you lose them, they no longer take premiums out of your check.

Kinda scary to not have ANY medical insurance at all though. But I surely understand needing the extra money in the paychecks.

401K - old and burned out

I am flexible part-time and still have 401K although if you can't afford health insurance you surely don't want money taken out for the 401K.

If you think you are struggling to make ends meet now, imagine trying to go to the doctor with no insurance. Paying out of pocket for medical expenses is an extreme financial burden. Not to mention most places don't even take self pay patients anymore. I got my insurance back with MQ. Its better than nothing. Don't do it. You will regret it. I did.

I think you are right. However, MQ's insurance - Kiki

is probably only a tad better than none at all. I recently had to go to a specialist. I still ended up paying 450 bux for who knows what, still not sure what I learned at that appt. My appointment was 10 minutes long and the "specialist" sat at his computer the entire time (probably typing up the visit report!!!). So bad I wanted to say, "why don't you have an MT do that so you can actually pay attention to ME, you know, the one who is paying you $450 bux.

I signed up for health insurance a few months ago and was told by my CCM that I cannot opt out until next year when insurance open period comes (June).

Health Insurance As An IC
Oct 21, 2010

I am considering becoming self employed (after a fashion) as an IC.  I have gone onto www.healthcare.gov and gone through the steps they advise when you want to take out private insurance.  Holy cow, the insurance plans offered varied in premium cost from $600 to $4000 per month for a family of 4, but the thing that got me was two items:  Maximum out of pocket for individual: 0$.  Annual deductible for individual: 0$.  Woohoo.  This just seems too good to be true.&n ...

HELP! Need Health Insurance
Jun 26, 2015

I've always had my own health insurance.  I didn't want to get stuck with whatever plan my employer happened to offer, and I didn't want to worry about losing my insurance if I changed jobs. But now the company I'm with is getting out of the insurance business, and I need to find new coverage.  The company I work for offers insurance, but like I said above, I don't want their plan.  And since they offer it, I'm not eligible for ACA (and I don't ...

Health Insurance Options Available Now To Anyone
Jan 30, 2011

To those of you who desperately need insurance now, here is a great place to look for temporary insurance.  If you eventually find out that COBRA is not going to happen or LM jerks you around so long you miss the deadline, you can still qualify for Uninsurable Risk insurance depending on the State you live in.  Some of these plans may even be cheaper than COBRA, which is something you might want to look into.   It is definitely worth your time to check this out instead of just wa ...

I Can't Qualify For Health Insurance With A VR Job
May 03, 2011

This is my first VR job. I cannot make enough lines to qualify for health insurance on it. This is the first time I have ever had this problem. I could easily exceed my line count with a straight typing job. The only way I could meet line count now is if I blaze through the jobs without proofreading and put out bad-quality jobs. I wouldn't even be able to get up to stretch my legs ever. I'd have to cut my lunch down to 30 minutes. And even then I'd be about 1000 to ...
